NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Philip Klein is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Philip Klein was born in Lehigh County literally at the turn of the century; depending on the hour of his birth on 31 Dec 1799, he may have been born in two different centuries in different time zones. He was a child of Johan Jacob Klein and Elisabetha Vogele. The family no doubt spoke German and Jacob, the parents were farmers.
Presumably at about age 25 he married Esther Fogele, possibly related. He was 26 when their first son was born and baptized at the Zion's Lutheran Church in Lower Macungit Twp. of Lehigh County, as Philip himself had been.
Farmland in the area may have become scarce. Philip, along with his brothers John and Jacob, the three wives, and some of their children migrated westward to Clarion County in about 1838-1840. It isn't know whether they all came together or if one brother came first and the others followed. Philip was by then 38-40 years old. Some of his children were grown and married already. We expect that the gravestone at Zion's Lutheran cemetery for Sara Marsteller nee Klein who died in 1857 was the daughter of Philip and Ester Klein. This migration westward marked not only a separation of family members but a distancing from the old close-knit German community. In the new home in Clarion County, the children probably began to learn English at school.

Family headed by Philip Kline: 2 males <5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 female <5, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50.
Johanes and Charles correspond to the two boys <5, but the other children do not match the list from the 1840 census and church records. Also, the older female is too old and the 15-20 too young to be Esther. It is possible she was right around 20 here and just over 30 in 1840. The older female may be a sister or sister-in-law and that could also account for the extra children.

Source notes

  • The various Vogele/Foegele/Vegli baptismal sponsors are probably related to Philip Klein's mother Elizabetha Vogele. Philip Vegli, sponsor at the birth of Philip Klein, is possibly Elizabetha Vogele's brother. Jesse Foegele, David Foegle, and Hannah Foegele are possibly Philip Klein's cousins.
  • The various Marsteller records include
    1) Susanna & Heinrich Marsteller as 1794 sponsors at baptism of Heinrich Vogele. See Longswamp Reformed Church Records
    2) Johann Marsteller & Catharina Klein, 30 June 1827 sponsosr at baptism of Henry Klein. See Records of Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church
    3) Sara (C.?) Klein born 11 May 1832, died 24 Feb 1857, wife of Johannes Marsteller. (Gravestone transcription).
It seems possible that Heinrich Marsteller(1794), Johann Marsteller(1827) and Johannes Marsteller(1857) are father son and grandson, and that Johannes Marsteller, husband of Sara Klein (of the gravestone), was possibly her 2nd cousin descended maternally from the Vogele's. However, see below, this Sara Klein is apparently not the Sara above, daughter of Philip Klein.
  • Sara Klein born about 1833 in Lehigh Co. PA, daughter of Philip Klein who migrated west to Clarion Co. PA by 1840, would have been at most 7 yrs old when she left Lehigh Co. PA. A more likely match for her husband (than John Marsteller of Lehigh Co.),is Wilhelm Dittman of Clarion Co. PA who married a Sarah Ann Kline born 3 May 1833 in Lehigh Co. PA, and died 12 June 1898 in Clarion Co. PA.

Conjecture

  • Gravestone transcription at Zion's Lutheran Cemetery, 1991 by E. W. Williams. In the Klein family plot, relationship unknown: "Sara (C?) Marsteller nee Klein, wife of Johannes Marsteller. She was born 11 May 1832, died 24 Feb 1857, age 24 y 9m 13d".
This birth year is comparable to what we know of Sara, daughter of Philip Klein; however, it is thought that Philip Klein and family migrated to Clarion Co. PA in about 1838-40. Daughter Sara would have been only about 7 yrs old in 1840. This Sara Klein may be a cousin to the children of Philip Klein.
