"Lehigh Church"

This vintage photo labeled "Lehigh Church" is from Memoirs of Rev. Joshua Yeager by A. R. Horne, 1889. The book contains entries such as "Names of Persons Confirmed at Lehigh Church", so the term is clearly meant as the church's name. We believe this image possibly depicts another church in Lehigh County, and was erroneously labeled in this publication. It depicts a 2-story building with tower on the gabeled end; not consistent with our photo of "The Lehigh Churhc/Zion's Lutheran". The church in our photograph has in its graveyard persons listed in the records of the Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church.

1 1790 United States Federal Census, Macunge Twp, Northampton Co, PA, pg 3. Census is not dated. Family headed by John Klyn: 3 males >16, 1 female. This corresponds to Johannes Peter Klein, 2 of his 3 sons, and wife Catharine. His sons Joh. Jacob Joh. Nicholas, and Johannes were aged 24, 18, & 16 in 1790.

2 1800 United States Federal Census, Maccongie Twp, Northampton Co, PA, Page 3. The census is undated.
  • John Klein: 1 male and 1 female >45. This corresponds to Johannes Peter Klein and wife Catharine, parents of Johan Jacob Klein.
  • Jacob Klein: 4 males <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44.
This corresponds to Joh. Peter age 6, Gabriel age 5, Joh. Jacob age 4, Philip age 1; male 16-25 unknown; Johan Jacob Klein age 34; Susanna age 2; Elizabeth Vogele age 25. The male age 16-25 could be his brother Johannes, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, or a farm laborer, etc.
  • Nicholas Klein: 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-45.
This presumably corresponds to Johan Nicholas Klein, brother of Johan Jacob Klein. Nicholas would have been age 28 in 1800; wife Maria would be the female age 26-45. The male age 16-25 could be his brother Johannes, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, or a farm laborer, etc. We only know of four children of Nicholas & Maria, all born after 1800. The female under age 10 has not been identified.
  • Henry Klein: 1 male 16-26, 2 females <10, 1 female 16-26. Relationship unknown
This listing accounts for 2 of the 3 sons of Johannes Peter Klein; the youngest, Johannes Klein, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, is likely living with one of his brothers.
1800 census pa northampton maccongie pg 3.jpg
3 1810 United States Federal Census, Macungie Twp., Northampton Co., PA, pg. 3.
  • Family of Jacob Kline: 2 males <10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 4 females <10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25.
Corresponds to Johannes 9, Philip 11, Joh. Jacob 14, Gabriel 15, Joh. Peter 16, and Johan Jacob Klein 44; Judith born in Feb 1810, Elizabeth 2, Catherine 5, Lydia 7, Susanna 12, & an unidentified female age 16-25 possibly a relative helping with the children. Elizabetha Vogele had died in February, before the census, at the birth of Judith.

  • Jacob Klein household: 5 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1male >44, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female >44.
The males corresponds to Gabriel 25, Joh. Jacob 24, Philip 21, Johannes 19, an unidentified male 16-25; Joh. Peter 26; and Johan Jacob Klein 54. Daughter Lydia age 17 is not recorded (married or working?). Of the 3 daughters age 10-15 (Catherine 15, Elizabeth 12, Judith 10) only 2 are recorded (possibly Judith did not survive). Susanna is 22. An unidentified female over 44 is possibly the housekeeper seen in 1810. It is also possible that Johan Jacob Klein remarried.
1820 census pa lehigh macungie pg 8.jpg
5 1830 United States Federal Census, Upper Milford Twp, Lehigh Co, PA, pg 33. Census is not dated.
  • Jacob Kline household: 1 male 40-50, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 40-50.
The location has changed from Macungie to a neighboring township, so may reflect Johan Jacob living with one of his sons & the son's wife; or he may still live with the possible housekeeper or 2nd wife seen in 1820, and one son. Johan Jacob would be 64, his oldest son Joh. Peter 36, so the ages are not a perfect fit.

Source Notes

  • Philip Lauer, married to Elizabeth Wieand of Montgomery Co. PA, was a tailor. They had 12 children including Catherine Lauer who had a child with Johan Jacob Kline. (See the will of Jacob Klein). Phillip purchased 47 acres of land lying one mile east of Alburtis from Nicholas Klein on 10 Apr. 1810. For complete biography of Philip Lauer from the History of the Counties of Lehigh & Carbon, by Alfred Mathews, and photos of gravestones at the Lehigh church, see the Phillip Lauer page.
  • Baptismal sponsors:
"Johannes Klein & Catharina", sponsors of Johann P. Klein, bapt. 6 Mar 1794, are the paternal grandparents
"Heinrich Vegli" , sponsor of Gabriel Klein, 17 May 1795, appears to be either the maternal grandfather, or the uncle of the infant's mother,Elizabetha Vogele.
"Franses Warmkessel & Elisabetha", 1797 sponsors of Johann J. Klein, are the sister & brother-in-law of the father, Johan Jacob Klein
"Jacob Druckemiller & Anna Maria", 1798 sponsors of Susanna Klein, are sister & brother-in-law of the mother,Elizabetha Vogele.
"Philip Vegli & Elisabetha" are unknown; possibly a brother, cousin, or uncle of the mother,Elizabetha Vogele.
"Daniel Schankweiler & Catharina", 1802 sponsors of Johannes Kleyn, are unknown; if related, Catharina Schankweiler is more likely a sister of the mother, Elizabetha Vogele than of the father, Johan Jacob Klein. His sister Catharina is married to John Moser.
" Salomon Heynle & Margaretha Fogeli", 1803 sponsors of Lidia Kleyn, are unknown; Margaretha is possibly a sister of Elizabetha Vogele. See the Johannes Peter Klein page, Source Notes and Conjecture sections, re. John Heinly and the Heinly family.
"Abraham Vogly & Catharina Desch (both single)", 1805 sponsors of Catharina Kleyn, are unknown; Abraham is possibly a brother of Elizabetha Vogele.
"Berhard Finley & Elisabeth", 1808 sponsors of Elisabeth Klein, are possibly the sister & brother-in-law of Elizabetha Vogele; 2 daughters of Peter Vogele were named Elizabetha & Elisabeth.
