Susanna was one of ten children of Johan Jacob Klein and Elizabeth Vogele. She was the middle child among the group of brothers, all her sisters being younger. When she was twelve years old her mother died soon after delivering a daughter Judith. Judith appears to have died at birth (she was baptized hurriedly, soon after birth, and does not appear in later records). The mother died two seeks later. Susanna no doubt shouldered much of the household responsibility at that point, with siblings as young as two and five years old. Susanna never married, possibly caring for her widowed father until his death when she was about 34 or 35 years old. She may have tired of raising children before she came of marriagable age, or she may have feared the dangers of childbirth. No doubt the responsibility she felt for her father set the pattern until his death. In her later years, she lived with her brothers' families. She is buried in the famly plot near her parents at Zion's Lutheran, Lower Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co. PA.
