Source Notes

  • Records of Zion's Lutheran Church, baptism of the children of Johannes Klein & wife Catharine, would suggest that he went by the name "Johannes" or "John". The will of Anna Catharine Klein, written in English, names her late husband as John Peter Klein. This will is the only source of the middle name Peter. Never-the-less it is felt that this John Peter & Anna Catharine Klein are the same couple as the Johannes and Catherine Klein of the church records. Not only do the children's and grandchildren's name match, but the daughter Anna Elisabeth and husband Frances Warmkassel, mentioned in the will, are also in the church records as baptismal sponsors in 1796 for Johann J. Klein (son of Anna Elisabeth's brother Jacob Klein, and grandson of Johannes/John Peter Klein).

Source Notes

  • Jacob Truckenmiller, named in the Letters of Admin. for John Klein (Johannes Peter Klein), is husband to Anna Maria Vogele (see Longswamp Church Records). Jacob Truckenmiller would be a brother-in-law of John Klein's son, Johan Jacob Klein, who married Elisabeth Vogele. Thus, he (Jacob Truckenmiller) was chosen to participate in administering the estate, not by the deceased, but by his son Johan Jacob Klein who was one of the administrators.
  • Records of Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church: Baptism of the children of Johannes Klein & wife Catharine, would suggest that he went by the name "Johannes" or "John". The will of Anna Catharine Klein, written in English, names her late husband as John Peter Klein. This will is the only source of the middle name Peter. Never-the-less it is felt that this John Peter & Anna Catharine Klein are the same couple as the Johannes and Catherine Klein of the church records. Not only do the children's and grandchildren's names match, but the daughter Anna Elisabeth and husband Frances Warmkassel, mentioned in the will, are also in the church records as baptismal sponsors in 1796 for Johann J. Klein (son of Anna Elisabeth's brother Jacob Klein, and grandson of Johannes/John Peter Klein).
  • The Heinly family of Macungie Twp., Lehigh County have a close connection with the Klein family.
    1) John Heinly was a signer/administrator of the Letters of Administration of Johannes Klein. This John Heinly is probably the one listed in "Heinly Ancestors" by Thomas M. Koser: John Heinly born about 1730, married to Catherine unknown, and residing near the Lehigh Church.
    2) John Hainly & wife Catharina also were baptismal sponsors in 1781 at the baptism of Johannes Klein, parents being Johannes Klein & wife Catharina.
    3) A later John Heinly (1824-1888) is buried at Foglesville Union Cemetery, married to Helena Kline(1825-1910). Their connection to the Heinly and Klein families is not yet known.

  • Macungie Township was originally part of Bucks County. Northampton Co. was created in 1752; at that time Macungie was divided into Upper Macungie, Lower Macungie , and Salisbury townships. Families on wide-scattered farms, with no near neighbors, functioned as isolated units. No villages of any importance existed in the early years, only gathering places such as taverns, mills, and churches. "As late as 1776 only two population centers existed in present-day Lehigh County: Allentown (officially callen Northampton, but known locally as "Allen's towne"), and Emmaus - but the latter remained closed to outsiders" (ie. non-Mennonites). The road from Macungie to Bethlehem was not built until 1760; before that people journeyed on foot using Indian paths.

Conjecture

The following couples are linked in the records to the Johannes Peter Klein family, and the wife in each case may be a Klein daughter. We have however no record that specifically names them as such, and they are not named in the will of Catherine Klein. They may be nieces rather than daughters.

  • Maria Margretha possibly a child of Johannes Peter & Catharine Klein, and a sister of Jacob Klein:
    * Jacob & Elisabetha Klein appear as baptismal sponsors of Elisabeth Fenstermacher, b. 1788 to Joseph & Maria Margretha Fenstermacher. (The identity of sponsors Jacob & Elisabetha Klein is unestablished; our Elisabetha Vogele who married Johan Jacob Klein would be too young in 1788 to be married.) (See Longswamp Reformed Church Records)
  • Catharine, wife of John Heinly may be a daughter, or sister, of Johannes Klein; see Source Notes above on the Heinly family of Macungie Twp. Johannes Hainle & Catharina were sponsors of Johannes Klein b. 1774 to Johannes Klein & Catharina. See Records of Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church.
