2 Personal communication from Ella Beals Wilson, 1990, to E W Williams. There had been a Marz family, distant kin she believed, in the neighborhood around Emlenton, Venango Co. PA.
3 History of Venango County PA, Brown Runk & Co., 1890. Reprinted 1984 Venango Co. Historical Society, Franklin PA, Walsworth Publ. Co., Marceline Missouri.
Zion church of the Evangelical Association: The burying ground was given in 1850 by Joseph Disler and David Martz. (Now, Zion Union Cemetery). John Martz was on the building committee for the church erected in 1875.
Note: Many families co-migrated from the Lehigh/Berks border area to the Clarion/Venango border area, the Martz family apparently among them.

Conjecture

  • Mertz church, Rockland Twp (immediately south of Longswamp Twp). Records published, see 1988 booklist, Berks Co. Genealogical Society p.1. Also, a Mertz Road runs northward crossing the boundary between Richmond Twp. & Maxatawny Twp, west of the town of Lyons. These 2 townships lie just west of Rockland and Longswamp Twps.
  • History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon by I. Daniel Rupp, 1844 Lancaster PA. p. 226 Longswamp township, "Mertztown, near the north-eastern corner of the township, is a small village, containing between twelve and fifteen dwellings, a tavern and store, a German Reformed and Lutheran church...".
  • The spellings Marz, Martz and Mertz are found in the records, and are probably the same family. I n German, "Marz" would be pronounced "Martz".
  • In "Historical & Biographical Annals of Berks County PA, 1909 by Montgomery, pgs.8,12. First taxables, believed listed in 1752, Longswamp Twp., Berks Co. PA, includes Nicholas Martz, Peter Martz, Joast Mertz (and a Henry Mentz), none of which are single men.
Pg. 1409. Signers of a petition to create Longswapm Township include Jacob Mertz and Peter Mertz.
Pg. 1051 Longswamp Reformed Church, 1748 building committee included Nicholas Martz, David Mertz, and Peter Mertz.
  • Deed #D 423, Unregistered Deeds collection, Lehigh County Historical Society Library. In an 1833 transaction between George Bieber & wife, George Smith & wife, and Henry Keck, the property in question borders land owned by Joseph Martz.

Children of Jacob & Magdalena Mertz:

  • Conrad Mertz, 1760, sponsors Conrad Mertz & Elisabeth Hammerig
  • Elisabeth Mertz born 16 Apr, bapt.23 May 1762, sponsors Peter Mertz & Elisabeth Mertz
(Note: This Elisabeth Mertz would be age 14 in 1775 when our Elisabeth Vogele, dau of Elisabeth Marz, was born.)

Additional children of Jacob Mertz:

  • David Mertz, 20 Oct. 1774, to Jacob Mertz & wf., sponsors David Mertz & Barbara Miller
  • Catharina Mertz, 1778, to Jacob Mertz & Margaretha, sponsors Nicholas & Catherine Mertz
Note: 'Jacob & Margaretha" may indicate a different couple, or "Margaretha" may be a mistake in the record, substituted for Magdalena. Magdalena's name appears again in 1783 as the parents apparently sponsor the baptism, of daughter named Magdalena. This seems to rule out the possibility of Margaretha having been a 2nd wife to Jacob.
  • Maria Eva 1782, to Jacob & wf., sponsors sponsor Eva Mertz
  • Magdalena 1783 to Jacob Mertz & wf., sponsors Jacob & Magdalena Mertz.
