Catherine Klein was one of ten children of Johan Jacob Klein and Elisabetha Vogele. Her five brothers were all older than the four younger girls; only sister Susanna, seven years older than Catherine, was senior to brother Philip and John. It appears that when Catherine was five years old, her mother delivered a daughter, Judith, who died at birth. The mother died two weeks later. Much of the responsibility for the household, and care of the younger children, probably fell on Susanna who was age twelve. Susanna herself never married.
Catherine married a Peter Klein, possibly a relative, and went to live in nearby Berks County. This may indicate that Peter's family were members of the Longswamp Reformed congregation rather than the companion Zion's Lutheran in Lehigh County; or it may simply have been where Peter found work or a farm to purchase. Catherine was possibly about age 27 when they married; the first child we know of was born in about 1832. Her father died in 1833, his will placing responsibility for the family finances in the hands of her two older brothers. Several years later (1838-1840), her three youngest brothers would leave with their families for the western part of the state. It isn't know whether the two older brothers and the sisters who remained behind ever saw these brothers and their families again.
Catherine bore at least five children that we know of, at least four of them girls. She died in 1873, aged about 68 years. Her husband Peter outlived her for another seven years, and they were buried side by side in Zion's Lutheran Cemetery.
