Susan Kline
William "Billy" Beals of Mariasville, Clarion Co. PA, married a woman named Susan or Susanna Kline, according to family records of his nephew, James Elgie Beals. For many years it was not known to which Kline family Susan belonged. We believe this had been solved by the obituary of Katherine Shirey (Kline), wife of Charles Kline, which says "one sister, Mrs. Wm. Beals of Mariasville, also survives".
Susan Kline would not have been Katherine Shirey's sister, but her sister-in-law, actually. Susan was the sister of Katherine's husband, Charles Kline. Susan was thus, like Charles, a child of Philip Klein and Ester Fogele of Lehigh County, PA.
Philip Klein was one of three brothers (Johannes Klein, & Johan Jacob Klein were the others) who came west in about 1840 from Lehigh Co. to Clarion Co. PA. Susannah was born about 1844, shortly after the family arrived in Clarion County. By 1850,Susannah was age 6, her father had died and her mother was living as a widow with nine children, the youngest at age four. It is likely that Susannah's older brothers, already in their twenties, took over the running of the farm and household.

7 | Obituary of Katherine Shirey Kline, posted Keystone Corner/Ancestry.com by Kelly Fulcher; publication source not given. "KLINE, Catherine Ann - Mrs. Catherine Ann Shirey Kline, an aged and respected lady of Richland Township, this county, passed away at her home near Mariansville, Sunday, March 3, after a short illness from complications due to advanced age. Mrs. Kline was a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Johnson Shirey, deceased, and was born in the same township in which she died, on Jan. 8, 1835. She was married on Jan 16. 1859, to Charles Kline, who preceded her in death 23 years ago. To their union were born five sons and one daughter, three of whom survive; Frank Kline, J.J. Kline and Sarah M. (Mrs. W.C. Texter). One sister, Mrs. Wm. Beal, of Mariasville, also survives. Note: the usage of "sister" in the obituary for Mrs. Wm. Beal would correctly be "sister-in-law". Thus Susan Kline Beals was a sister of Charles Kline (b. 1828), and a daughter of Philip Klein and Ester Fogele of Lehigh Co. PA. |
Source Notes
- Duane Beals lists May Shoup (born 1873, married George Gilger) as a child of William Beals. The 1900 census lists her as a servant, housekeeper. The census further indicates only 3 living children of William & Susan; apparently the 3 listed above lived to marry. May Shoup appears to be unrelated.
- The 1860 census which shows Susan (Kline) age 17, married to William Beals, clarifies that this Susan is not the same as Susan Kline daughter of John Klein & Anna Fenstermacher; their daughter is living at home, age 23 in 1860.
