Source Notes

  • [1] [2] The child listed as Alice in 1870 and Anna Alice in 1880 is actually Anna Elizabeth Frederick. Anna Elizabeth went by the nickname Ellie (see [7]) which may have been misunderstood by the enumerator. Whatever the cause, there is no mention of Anna Elizabeth in these two census records, and a child "Alice" is never mentioned elsewhere. Meanwhile, the ages match exactly.
  • At some point she began to place "Ella" as her first name, with middle initial "A". See calling cards for both Ella A. Frederick and Annie E. Frederick.
  • * Additional notes from Ella May Beals, compiled ca. 1983: "Professor Meckle was invited to play the organ in one of the new churches (Wendlings Corners). The Meckles were from Germany. They bought farm and garden products from my grandmother, Ella Kline [ie. Elizabeth Anna Frederick (Kline)], and she was very friendly with my Aunt Annie Sheffer and her family, taking an active interest in her children. She (Mrs. Meckle)was instrumental in having a playground built in Emlenton. When my brother Loy was in High School, she bought boxes of bittersweet, rhododendron leaves, etc. from him, to use in her florist business. She loaned him books to read and once gave him a typewriter of early vintage. It had been dropped, but we were very proud of it."

Conjecture

There is not a good consensus on whether her name is Elizabeth Anna or Anna Elizabeth. The birth certificate reads Anna Elizabeth, while the obituary reads Ella Anna. Clearly she went by variants of Elizabeth (e.g. Ellie, Ella), so I have chosen to list her as Elizabeth Anna Frederick.
