12 1887 History of Clarion County PA by Davis, p. xxx.
'Kline, Reuben, Kossuth p.o., Ashland, a merchant and farmer of Kossuth, PA., was born in Lehigh county, Pa., on December 7, 1828, and was a son of John and Anna (Fanstermacher) Kline, who settled in Clarion county, Pa., in 1837, and in Ashland, Pa., in 1847, and cleared and improved the farm which is now owned and occupied by the late Henry Kline. They had a family if eleven chldren - Henry, Reuben, Jacob, Maria, Catherine, Eliza, Susan, James, Elizabeth, Sarah and William. Reuben Kline settled in Ashland, Pa., in 1847, and was married twice. His first wife was Ann E., a daughter of John and Mary (McCleef) Measley, of Ashland, Pa. They had a family of seven children - John M., George W., Harriet L., Maggie A., Andrew C., Reuben F., and Susan L. His second wife was Harriet, a daughter of John and Mary (Kribbs) Weaver, of Ashland, Pa. They have had a family of chldren. Mr. Kline has served as constable of Ashland, Pa. for seven years, was justice of the peace for five years, and has been engaged in the mercantile business for ten years."
13 Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley, Pennsylvania by John Jorday, Leurs Historical Publ. Co. 1913, NY. 3 Vols. Pg. 634 biography of ____Kline, a native of Clarion County, Pa.; wife not named; three children: 1.) Aaron (biography included); 2.) David; 3.) Rebecca Ann, married a Mr. Henry and went to Missouri. Mr Kline died prior to 1859; his widow married a Mr. Stauffer of Porter Twp. and had 2 children: John, married a Miss Wiant; Levi married a Miss Wike and living on the old Stauffer homestead in Porter Twp.
Ed. Forwarded by Kerry Kline (deceased). In the margin has been written: "The name was David Kline, not a native of Clarion Co., b. 1808 d. 14 Sept 1833 Salem,in Northampton Co.; was a son of John Jacob Klein b. 1781; a grandson of Peter Klein b. 27 April 1741; a great-grandson of Philip Wendel Kline.
See Conjecture section below; we believe daughter Rebecca Ann visited in the home of our John Klein; if so this solidifies the connection between our immigrant Johannes Klein and Philip Wendel Klein arriving on ship Phoenix, 1744.

This biography continues with biographies of Aaron, son of (David) Kline, and David Ursines, son of Aaron & Elizabeth Wiant Kline. A second biography of David U. Kline is found in "Commemorative and Biographical Record of Central Penna., by J. H. Beers & Co, 1898 Chicago.

Kline has 100 acres.

19 Descendants of Martin Klein, research manuscript by Cammy Whitehill Shreffler, 2006.
Per personal communication from Cammy Whitehill Shreffler: William O. Kline, youngest child of John & Annie Kline, was 11 yrs. old when his father died, and 13 yrs. old when his mother died. He lived with the Fye family (his sister Catherine) for a while. "He had the hardest job at the mill until he was about 18". William O. Kline's oldest daughter was Nora Kline Glass. Her daughters (granddaughters of Wm. O. Kline) Dorothea Glass Slye and Emma Marie Glass Piper supplied this information (regarding the age of William O. Klein at his parents' deaths) to Cammy Shreffler. Cammy is the granddaughter of Dorothea Glass Slye. Since William O. Kline's birthday was 28 March 1851, if his father died when William was age 11, the death would have been between 28 March 1862 and 28 March 1863. Similarly, his mother's death would be between 28 March 1864 and 28 March 1865.

Conjecture

  • [12]DAVID KLEIN FAMILY - DESCENDANTS OF PHILIP WENDEL KLEIN

David Kline, a great-grandson of Philip Wendel Klein eventually settled in Clarion County, as did the descendants of our Johannes Klein. It appears possible that Rebecca Ann Kline, a daughter of this David Kline, may have visited in the home of John Klein in 1860. (See 1860 census image, above). Three children of David Kline also appear living together in the 1850 census of Porter Twp., Clarion Col PA. Aaron Cline, age 19, Farmer; David age 17; Rebecca age 18, all born in PA. (See census image, page of Abram Howe).
This presence in Clarion County of descendants of Philip Wendel Klein strengthens our belief that Johannes Klein and Philip Wendel Klein on the ship "Phoenix" were related, and that Johannes Klein from the "Phoenix" was the same person as Johannes Klein, father of our Johannes Peter Klein of Lehigh County. It would indicate that these two families kept in touch over the years, and co-migrated to western PA.
