"Lehigh Church"

This vintage photo labeled "Lehigh Church" is from Memoirs of Rev. Joshua Yeager by A. R. Horne, 1889. The book contains entries such as "Names of Persons Confirmed at Lehigh Church", so the term is clearly meant as the church's name. We believe this image possibly depicts another church in Lehigh County, and was erroneously labeled in this publication. It depicts a 2-story building with tower on the gabeled end; not consistent with our photo of "The Lehigh Churhc/Zion's Lutheran". The church in our photograph has in its graveyard persons listed in the records of the Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church.

1 1790 United States Federal Census, Macunge Twp, Northampton Co, PA, pg 3. Census is not dated. Family headed by John Klyn: 3 males >16, 1 female. This corresponds to Johanes Peter Klein, 2 of his 3 sons, and wife Catharine. His sons Joh. Jacob Joh. Nicholas, and Johannes were aged 24, 18, & 16 in 1790.

2 1800 United States Federal Census, Maccongie Twp, Northampton Co, PA, Page 3. The census is undated.
  • John Klein: 1 male and 1 female >45. This corresponds to Johannes Peter Klein and wife Catharine, parents of Johan Jacob Klein.
  • Jacob Klein: 4 males <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44.
This corresponds to Joh. Peter age 6, Gabriel age 5, Joh. Jacob age 4, Philip age 1; male 16-25 unknown; Johan Jacob Klein age 34; Susanna age 2; Elizabeth Vogele age 25. The male age 16-25 could be his brother Johannes, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, or a farm laborer, etc.
  • Nicholas Klein: 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-45.
This presumably corresponds to Johan Nicholas Klein, brother of Johan Jacob Klein. Nicholas would have been age 28 in 1800; wife Maria would be the female age 26-45. The male age 16-25 could be his brother Johannes, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, or a farm laborer, etc. We only know of four children of Nicholas & Maria, all born after 1800. The female under age 10 has not been identified.
  • Henry Klein: 1 male 16-26, 2 females <10, 1 female 16-26. Relationship unknown
This listing accounts for 2 of the 3 sons of Johannes Peter Klein; the youngest, Johannes Klein, age 26 in Aug. of 1800, is likely living with one of his brothers.

3 1810 United States Federal Census, Macungie Twp., Northampton Co., PA, pg. 3. Family of Jacob Kline: 2 males <10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 4 females <10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25. Fits for Johan Jacob Klein and his children, Elizabetha Vogele died in February, before the census.

4 1820 United States Federal Census. Macungie Twp, Lehigh Co, PA, page 8. Jacob Klein: 5 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1male >44, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female >44. Therese ages are a close match for the family of Johan Jacob Klein. There is one too many male children and two missing females, but these differences can be explained readily. The oldest woman is a problem since Elizabeth Vogele died in 1810.

5 1830 United States Federal Census, Upper Milford Twp, Lehigh Co, PA, pg 33. Cenesus is not dated. Family of Jacob Kline: 1 male 40-50, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 40-50. The ages are a little off here, Johan Jacob Klein should be 64 and his children are in their 30's or 20's. The location is consistent with previous information.

Source Notes

  • In the will of Johan Jacob Klein, the term "step-sons" is applied to his sons-in-law Isaac Matturn and Peter Klein. It is assumed that this is a change in usage, and not that he raised them in his home.
  • Philip Lauer, married to Elizabeth Wieand of Montgomery Co. PA, was a tailor. They had 12 children including Catherine who had a child with Johan Jacob Kline. (See the will of Jacob Klein). Phillip purchased 47 acres of land lying one mile east of Alburtis from Nicholas Klein on 10 Apr. 1810. For complete biography of Philip Lauer from the History of the Counties of Lehigh & Carbon, by Alfred Mathews, and photos of gravestones at the Lehigh church, see the Phillip Lauer page.
