- John W. King is listed as the first child of John King and Elizabeth Unknown (McCormick) based on the wills of the parents and on his close association with the family in census and other sources. There is not a direct source stating this relationship.

In the fist house there is a John King, 49, married to an Elizabeth King, 47. They live with seven children: son James M. King, 27; son Degall[?] P. King, 20; son Daniel G.[?] King, 18; daughter Lucinda King,14; daughter Hannah E. King, 12; son Andrew M. King, 9; and daughter [unknown] M. King, 6. John, James, Degall, and Daniel are farmers. Everyone was born in NC. The next house on the list belongs to George W. King, 26, an his wife Mary A. King, 23. They live with two children: son John V.[?] King, 3, and son Zacariah T.[?] King, age 3 months. George is a farmer. They were all born in NC. The next house on the list belongs to William King, 28, and his wife Elizabeth King, 26. They live with five children: son George W. King, 7; son John F. King, 5; son James W. King, 4; daughter Susan L. King, 2; and daughter Martha P. King, age one month. William is a farmer. Everyone was born in NC except for Elizabeth, who was born in TN. Elizabeth is illiterate. George and John attended school within the census year. This census is dated 1 Jun 1850. |

This would fit with the census data for 1820 showing Elizabeth King as head of household, provided the census came after May. That would give an approximate birth year for John King of 1760. Also listed is a grave for Nancy King, died 1797, age 26 years and a grave for William Pryor King, born 9-9-1909 died 7-13-1964 USNR, WWII .

| R3 | When all of the John King census results for 1790 - 1840 are plotted on a timeline, it is clear that there is more than one John King in Western Mecklenburg County during those years. The first seems to have been born between 1755 and 1770. This is likely the person buried at Steele Creek Presbyterian Cemetery. There also apprears to be a John (maybe John W.) King born around 1790 and possibly a John I. King, born perhaps around 1820-30. All of the citations can not be for the same person unless there are very great discrepancies in reported ages. The NC Marriage records show a James King marrying an Elizabeth Smith in 1798 and a John King marrying Elizabeth McCormick in 1797. Another John King marriage, to Margaret Rogers occurs in 1818. This may be the source of some of the difficulty in sorting out the relationships and names.
