M1 1860 United states Federal Census, Elk Twp., Clarion Co. PA, Pg. 2. Date of census: 11 July 1860.
Lines 13-18:

John M. Mong, age 20, farmer, real estate value $2250, personal estate $1000; Elizabeth Mong age 50; Elizabeth Mong age 22; Hiram age 18; Leonard age 15; Benjamin age 8. All born PA.

  • Note: This appears to be John M. Mong and wife Elizabeth (no children), living with John's mother and siblings. Eliza's age wobbles within a 9 year range over the 60 yrs of her census records( born 1840-1849), suggesting limited literacy. The presence of John's brother Hiram, and the fact that John named a son "Harry" suggests that this is his family, and that his son's actual name could have been "Hiram".

Source Notes

  • John M. Mong in the 1860 census, age 20 (b 1840)and Eliza age 22 (b. 1838), living with mother & 3 brothers (Hiram, Leonard, Benjamin), appears not to be John the husband of Elizabeth Kline, but a John M. Mong living with a sister Eliza. See the 1850 census for this family, which includes John M. Mong age 10 , sister Elizabeth age 12, parents Jacob age 51, wife Elizabeth age 40; children include Hiram age 8, Leonard age 6, etc. Thus the1860 John M. Mong age 20 and Elizabeth age 22 are not married but siblings living with their mother. In the 1900 census John M. Mong,Elk Twp., is married to Martha for 35 years (ie. married by 1865), with 0 children born. The John Mong married to Eliza Kline had children with her born as late as 1878 apparently. The 1850 census for John M. Mong (with brothers Hiram, Leonard, Benjamin) has a father named Jacob Mong.
