  • p. xxx.
"Kline, Reuben, Kossuth p.o., Ashland, a merchant and farmer of Kossuth, PA., was born in Lehigh county, Pa., on December 7, 1828, and was a son of John and Anna (Fanstermacher) Kline, who settled in Clarion county, Pa., in 1837, and in Ashland, Pa., in 1847, and cleared and improved the farm which is now owned and occupied by the late Henry Kline. They had a family if eleven children - Henry, Reuben, Jacob, Maria, Catherine, Eliza, Susan, James, Elizabeth, Sarah and William. Reuben Kline settled in Ashland, Pa., in 1847, and was married twice. His first wife was Ann E., a daughter of John and Mary (McCleef) Measley, of Ashland, Pa. They had a family of seven children - John M., George W., Harriet L., Maggie A., Andrew C., Reuben F., and Susan L. His second wife was Harriet, a daughter of John and Mary (Kribbs) Weaver, of Ashland, Pa. They have had a family of children. Mr. Kline has served as constable of Ashland, Pa. for seven years, was justice of the peace for five years, and has been engaged in the mercantile business for ten years."

Source Notes

  • The oldest daughter is listed in both the 1870 and 1880 census as Ellen or Ellen C. Fye. She's age 8 in 1870, 17 in 1880, so the 1862/63 birth date checks. Source 12/ Shreffler has her listed as Emma C. Fye, born about 1863, who married John Kennemuth. This raises the question of whether there was an Emma C. somewhere in the records (different surname?) who did marry a John Kennemuth, or conversely whether Ellen C. Fye married John Kennemuth. Census evidence of an Emma C. Fye is not found.
  • John S. Kinnemute (age 32) and wife Emma L (age 28)are listed in the 1900 census, Ashland Twp., Clarion Co. PA. Emma's age indicates a birth date of 1872, rather than the 1862 date for (Ellen/Emma) the daughter of Jacob Fye & Catherine Kline.
  • The 1880 census lists a younger daughter named Lydia L Fye, age 8, so born 1872. Source 12/Shreffler lists her name as Ellen. If in 1880 the family said her name was Lydia Ellen, the census taker may have heard it as Lydia L. However, that makes two daughters with the name Ellen. Shreffler does not name her sources; it is possible that some source has recorded Lydia as "Ellen", and the actual Ellen as "Emma". Given the 1900 census of John S. Kinnemuth, the wife Emma being born in 1872, is it possible that Emma and Lydia are the same person?

This naming confusion also calls into question the spouse Harry Rhoades. Is it possible that Emma is not of this family, and that Rhoades is the husband of Ellen, the older sister?

  • The Calling Card Book of Elizabeth Anna Frederick, her husband a cousin to the children of Catherine Kline, includes the following cards: Ellen B. Kenemuth, pg.7; John S. Kinemuth, pg. 18; Mr. & Mrs J. Kenemuth, pgs. 2 & 11.
