Robert Logan is not in my direct ancestry. He is related by marriage to Euphamia Stoughton, who is 1 step removed in the following ways:

PARENTS OF ROBERT LOGAN:
Massey Dillon was a daughter of Isaac Dillon, a veteran of the American Revolution who was killed in an Indian raid at Phillipsburg, NJ. Massey was scalped in this raid, but survived and recovered. She became the wife of Robert Logan (Sr.). This Robert Logan is reported to have been born before 1775 in Ireland; appears by 1800 in Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co. PA; and is taxed in 1803 for 400 acres of land in Slippery Rock Twp. This Robert Logan (and presumably Massey Dillon) appear in the 1800 census with 2 sons & 2 daughters under age 10; and in the 1820 census with 4 sons and 2 daughters. Among their sons were Robert Logan who married Euphamia Stoughton & resided in Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co. Pa; Isaac Logan who married 1st Rachel Morton, & 2nd Dianna Morton, & resided in Allegheny Co. PA; and possibly a James Logan & wife Susanna who resided near Isaac in Allegheny Co. in 1860 census.
Robert Logan the elder made his will in April of 1840 and died on or about 2 June 1840. The will mentions by name a daughter Martha, wife of Robert Bell.

ROBERT LOGAN appears to have been born about 1798 to parents Robert Logan (Sr.) and Massey Dillon. He married Euphamia Stoughton and appears to have had 7 or 8 daughters.
Robert Logan appears in the 1840 census to have possibly had 7 daughters plus a wife and either his mother or mother-in-law in the household. (Any of these 9 females could of course have been from outside the family. The two youngest are under age 5, so we presume a wife is present in 1840.)
Robert was presumably widowed by 1850. Euphamia is not found in the census of 1850, but Robert appears to be living with Euphamia's aunt & uncle, Magdalena & John Wigton. Magdalena Wigton nee Covert was a sister of Catherine Covert, Euphamia's mother.
Robert Logan is said to have entered service in the Union Army at age 64, and died of exposure at Newport News VA before his 3 yrs service were completed.
The daughters names are mostly unknown to us. Eleana Logan is named in the 1841 will of her uncle Jacob Stoughton. Catharine is named in the biography of her son Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton, in a Kansas state history, which also names the grandmother Massey Dillon Logan. Martha is named in her father's will.

Abstract: Catherine Covert was of Holland descent; her mother's maiden name was Van Zandt, a family that settled on Manhattan Island, NY. John Stoughton, of English descent, was a farmer and owned 350 acres of land in three farms. His brother Samuel Stoughton was a Baptist minister, and the entire family was strict in its religious observances. Children of John and Catherine Covert Stoughton were: William, Luke, Andrew, Jacob (died unmarried); John, (also a participant in the war of 1812), Barnard, Jane (married Thomas Boyle), Hannah (married John Patterson);Effie, married Robert Logan, a farmer, who was killed during the Civil War; Polly (died young).

8 Contract for Deed, Slippery Rock Twp. property of Robert Logan& wife Euphamia, being transferred to Smith Neal for $22, dated 14 Dec 1827, Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co. PA. It was a portion of an eight acres of property acquired by Samuel Caldwell in 1824 from Hugh & Charles Bigham, who in 1819 purchased the property from the trustees of Western University; who in turn acquired it from the trustees of the Pittsburgh Academy, who received it from the PA state legislature in 1787. Robert Logan acquired 1 acre and a quarter from Caldwell, date not specified but after 1824.

A biographical & genealogical entry re. Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton born 4 Mar 1850 in Harrisville, Butler Co. Pa, subsequently practicing law in Emporia Kansas, was son of William Hamilton (born Mercer Co. PA, moved to Iowa) and Catharine Logan. Her father was Robert Logan who served in the Union army, 100th Regiment Pa infantry. "He entered service at the advanced age of sixty-four and died from exposure at Newport News, VA, before his 3 years' service was over." Additionaly, the maternal great-grandmother of Judge Hamilton (Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton), "Massie Dillon", when a girl of twelve years was captured, scalped and left for dead by the Indians in a raid at Phillipsburg NJ, both parents being killed at the same time." She was found by white settlers and recovered. Her father was Isaac Dillon of NJ, veteran of the Revolution.

  • The will mentions "wife and several children who have survived me"(these are unnamed); son-in-law Robert Bell & wife Martha Bell, formerly Martha Logan; also mentions property in Slippery Rock Twp sold to John and Thomas Patterson. Witnesses are John McGeorge and Samuel Krist; executors are Alexander McBride and Isaac S. Pearson.
    Note: We believe this to be the will of the senior Robert Logan, husband of Massy Dillon; see dated documents below.
  • Deposition of Samuel Krist and John McGeorge dated 2 June 1840, saying they witnessed the signing of the will of Robert Logan, in the home of William Logan, on 18 April 1840. (Presumably this signifies that Robert Logan died on or shortly before 2 June 1840.)

11 Suit against estate of Robert Logan by Rebekah & Dan Smith
  • Suit of Rebekah & Dan Smith against estate of Robert Logan for $7.29 for services rendered Robert Logan during his life, and wife Massey after his death. Services are dated 16 Mar. 1839, & 1841. Lawsuit is dated 5 June 1842(1849?).
    Note: The wording that services in 1839 were during the lifetime of Robert Logan, and services in 1841 for wife Massey were after his death, suggests the estate of Robert Logan whose will is dated 18 Apr. 1840. In addition this document contains a poorly legible signature by Alexander McBride, Executor. In the 1840 will of Robert Logan, he names an "Alexander McBride" as executor. Taken together, this suggests strongly that the 1840 will is that of Robert Logan husband of Massey, (and thus, the father of Robert Logan, husband of Euphamia Stoughton).

    Editor's Note: the will of Robert Logan which names Martha Bell and son-in-law Robert Bell mentions a wife, but DOES NOT NAME HER. (See image, transcript, & accompanying documents elsewhere, this page.) This appears to be the will of Robert Logan (Sr.), husband of Massy Dillon, making Martha Bell not a daughter but a sister-in-law of Euphamia Stoughton. The explanatory name "Euphamia Stoughton" as wife has apparently been added erroneously to the will extract by the website page owner.

Robert Logan issued a notice to creditors, that he would not pay bills for his wife Massey who had left him "on the 19th instant". (i.e. 19 Nov 1827). The unknown length of separation extended at least through January.

The second, 285 acres, date of warrant (& of return) 5 Jan 1838, patentee Robert Logan.

Source notes

  • The 1840 census for the Robert Logan family indicates 7 young females between 0 & 20 yrs old. If all are daughters, this would indicate at least 8 children for the family, as Adaline was born in 1844.
    Eleana was born sometime before her uncle Jacob's will of 1841. She is curiously the only one of the sisters mentioned in the will.
  • Assuming Robert Logan were approximately the same age as Euphamia, he would have been 50 or older at the start of the Civil War. Stoughton family source for John W. Jourdan's history was likely a nephew of Robert Logan. Per Jim Voltz: "My guess, though a pretty good one, is that the information in Genealogical and personal history of Western Pennsylvania, Vol. 3 came from my great-grandfather Dr. James Boyle. Robert Logan would have been his uncle. Granted James was the youngest in the family and never knew his uncle, but he was born near the war's end, when it was still fresh on everyone's mind. His parents and his numerous siblings would have lived through it and known."
    The Civil War service (at age 64) of Robert Logan is corroborated by "Kansas, a cyclopedia of state history", see above.
  • Euphamia is not seen in the record after the 1840 census. Husband Robert Logan died sometime about 1864-65. Source W1, the Flitch-McGowan-Hockaday-Brown family tree, lists a death date of 1841 for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan), which conflicts with the 1844 birth date of her daughter Adaline, documented in both the 1870 (Abby) and 1880 (Adeline) census. The proposed 1841 death date for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan) needs documentation. It may arise from their original assumption that "Massey" and Euphamia are the same person. It may be "Massey" who died in 1841. Source W1 also says Robert Logan died 2 June 1840, so this must refer to the elder Robert Logan, father-in-law of Euphamia Stoughton.
