NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Euphamia Stoughton is not in my direct ancestry. She is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Euphamia "Effie" Stoughton was born in 1810 in Butler Co. PA, probably in Centre Twp., to parents John Stoughton and Catherine Covert. Her parents were married in New Jersey, and left to make their way westward about 15 years before Effie was born. She was the oldest daughter, with 5 older brothers, 1 younger brother and 3 younger sisters. Polly, the youngest of these, did not survive to adulthood. Effie married Robert Logan, a farmer, possibly by 1830. She appears not to have been enumerated in her parents' household in 1830 although she could have been working elsewhere. Provided that Robert Logan's wife was still Effie Stoughton, by 1840 they had 7 daughters. Euphamia's death date is unknown. She is not found in the census of 1850, but Robert, presumably a widower, appears to be living with Euphamia's aunt & uncle, Magdalena & John Wigton. Magdalena Wigton nee Covert was a sister of Catherine Covert, Euphamia's mother. It is possible that by that date, their daughters were all either married or working & boarding elsewhere.
Robert Logan, lacking family at home and possibly needing income, entered service in the Union Army at age 64, and died of exposure at Newport News VA before his 3 yrs service was completed.
The daughters names are mostly unconfirmed. Eleana Logan is named in the 1841 will of her uncle Jacob Stoughton. Catharine is named in the biography of her son Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton, in a Kansas state history. Additional names are found in website family trees which however do not document the link to Effie & Robert Logan. We do not know at this point if these names come from sound family knowledge, unstated primary sources, or simply hopeful guessing.

A biographical & genealogical entry re. Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton born 4 Mar 1850 in Harrisville, Butler Co. Pa, subsequently practicing law in Emporia Kansas, was son of William Hamilton (born Mercer Co. PA, moved to Iowa) and Catharine Logan. Her father was Robert Logan who served in the Union army, 100th Regiment Pa infantry. "He entered service at the advanced age of sixty-four and died from exposure at Newport News, VA, before his 3 years' service was over." Additionaly, the maternal great-grandmother of Judge Hamilton (Alphius Lamont L. Hamilton), "Massie Dillon", when a girl of twelve years was captured, scalped and left for dead by the Indians in a raid at Phillipsburg NJ, both parents being killed at the same time." She was found by white settlers and recovered. Her father was Isaac Dillon of NJ, veteran of the Revolution.

Source notes

  • The 1840 census for the Robert Logan family indicates 7 young females between 0 & 20 yrs old. If all are daughters, this would indicate at least 8 children for the family, as Adaline was born in 1844.
Eleana was born sometime before her uncle Jacob's will of 1841. She is curiously the only one of the sisters mentioned in the will.
  • Stoughton family source for John W. Jourdan's history was likely a nephew of Robert Logan. Per Jim Voltz: "My guess, though a pretty good one, is that the information in Genealogical and personal history of Western Pennsylvania, Vol. 3 came from my great-grandfather Dr. James Boyle. Robert Logan would have been his uncle. Granted James was the youngest in the family and never knew his uncle, but he was born near the war's end, when it was still fresh on everyone's mind. His parents and his numerous siblings would have lived through it and known."
The Civil War service (at age 64) of Robert Logan is corroborated by "Kansas, a cyclopedia of state history", see above.
  • Euphamia is not seen in the record after the 1840 census. Husband Robert Logan died sometime about 1864-65. Source W1, the Flitch-McGowan-Hockaday-Brown family tree, lists a death date of 1841 for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan), which conflicts with the 1844 birth date of her daughter Adaline, documented in both the 1870 (Abby) and 1880 (Adeline) census. The proposed 1841 death date for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan) needs documentation. It may arise from their original assumption that "Massey" and Euphamia are the same person. It may be "Massey" who died in 1841. Source W1 also says Robert Logan died 2 June 1840; this however now appears to be the death date of the senior Robert Logan, father-in-law of Euphamia Stoughton.

W1 Flitch-McGowan-Hockaday-Brown family tree, on Ancestry.com, owner "mflitch7" Marc Flitch. Site lists descendants of Euphema Massey Stoughton and Robert Logan, Jr. (children Adaline, Clarissa, Martha, Eliza Jane (1825-1888),& Hannah Logan (1837-????)). Site lists parents of Euphema Stoughton as Catherine Covert and (Ed.: erroneously, we believe) John Walker Stoughton. See John Stoughton for discussion. The site also gives for Euphema/Massey a marriage date of before 1825, a notation of "separation from Robert Logan, Jr" dated 21 Nov 1827, and a death date for Euphema/Massey of 1841.
For Robert Logan Jr. it gives birthdate 1795 in Butler, PA, and death date 2 Jun 1840 in Cranberry, Butler Co. PA.
Sources listed for Euphema/ Massey Stoughton are the 1810 & 1820 census for J. Stoughton family, & the 1830 & 1840 census for Robert Logan family. None of these census list wife or children's names, marriage or death dates, so sources for this information not specified.
Daughters are listed as Eliza Jane Logan (m. Wm. McGowan), Clarissa Logan (m. Archey McGowan), Martha Logan, Hannah Logan, and Adaline Logan (m. Thomas J. Ross). This site includes a photo portrait of Eliza Jane Logan.

Ed. Note: We believe this website has combined information on 2 generations of Robert Logans, (the older Robert Logan married to Massey and their son Robert married to Euphamia Stoughton). Information re. Massey has been applied to Euphamia Stoughton, such as the published notice of separation, and a confusion of the death date of Robert Logan (Sr.) for that of Robert Logan his son.
