They are listed as living with seven children: Son Dinwiddie Wilson, 25; son James Wilson, 23; daughter N. Jane Wilson, 21; son Henderson Wilson, 18; son Robert Wilson, 15; son William Wilson, 13; and daughter Matilda Wilson, 7. In addition to Lot and Nancy, James is also listed as married. Lot is listed as a farmer, Nancy is listed as "keeps house." Dinwiddie is listed as "helps on farm," and N. Jane is listed as "helps at home." Robert, William, and Matilda are listed as having attended school during the census year. Matilda is listed as not yet being able to write. Everyone in the family and their parents are listed as having been born in PA. This census is dated June 2, 1880.

2 1900 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Township, Butler County, PA, Enumeration District 84, Page 8, lines 51-52 lists John Barkley, 35, born Feb 1865, married to Tillie Barkley, 27, born Sep 1872. They have been married for four years. Tillie has not given birth to any children. Everyone and their parents were born in PA. John works as a "day laborer," but has been unemployed for three months. Both can read, write, and speak English. They rent their home, which is not a farm. This census is dated 12 Jun 1900.

3 1910 United States Federal Census, Prospect Borough, Butler County, PA, Enumeration District 89, Page 5, lines 46-47 lists John Barkley, 46, married to Tillie E. Barkley, 37. They have been married for 14 years and this was the first marriage for both of them. Tillie has not given birth to any children. Everyone and their parents were born in PA. John works as a laborer doing "odd jobs" but has been unemployed all year. Tillie is listed as a "Milliner"[?] working at home. They own their house, with a mortgage. Both can read, write, and speak English. This census is dated 18 Apr 1910.

4 1920 United States Federal Census, Prospect Borough, Butler County, PA, Enumeration District 47, Page 2, lines 63-65 lists John Burkley, 54 (57?), married to Tillie E. Barkley, 47. They own their home without a mortgage. Also present is a cousin (of whom is not indicated) named Samuel S. McCullough, 48. Everyone and their parents were born in PA. Everyone can read, write, and speak English. John works as a [illegible] cutter at a sawmill. Tillie is a dress maker at home. Samuel's occupation is listed as simply "hardware." A margin note indicates that their house was on Butler Street. This census is dated 24 Jan 1920.

5 1930 United States Federal Census, Prospect Borough, Butler County, PA, Enumeration District 58, Page 7, lines 18-20 lists John Barkley, 65, married to Tillie E. Barkley, 57. Also present is niece Janet J. Wilson, 10. They own their home and have no radio set. At the time of their first marriages, John was 31 and Tillie was 23. Janet attended school within the year. Everyone and their parents were born in PA. Everyone can read, write, and speak English. John works as a laborer at [illegible] wax [?]. A margin note indicates that their house was on Butler Street. This census is dated 19 + 21 Apr 1930, though a margin note suggests that this home was enumerated on the 19th.

9 Personal knowledge of Russell W. Wilson, son of Bert Winiford Wilson & grand-nephew of Tillie Wilson Barkley; interviewed by niece Elizabeth Wilson Williams June 2008. Tillie Wilson married John Barkley, resided Evans City, had an adopted girl named Janet.
10 Jan Heckathorn (Finke) correspondence 2008-ongoing; and research manuscript "Descendants of James Wilson", including recollections of her mother, Dorothy Frances Wilson (Heckathorn), who was a granddaughter of James L. Wilson.

  • Birthplace of Matilda E. "Tillie" Barkley is listed as Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co. PA, on the basis of her parents, Lot Wilson and Nancy Gallagher place of residence in 1870 and 1880 per federal census.
  • It is possible that daughter Luella Barkley, who died in 1918, died at birth; or she may have been as much as 8 yrs. old. By 1910 Tillie had had no children; she would have been 45 yrs old in Feb. 1918 when Luella died. Great-niece Janet Jane Wilson was adopted sometime after Jan. 1920, as she appears in the 1920 census, age 7 mos., with her natural parents; see George Henderson Wilson.
