James F Beals.jpg

James Francis Beals was born in June of 1846. His parents had come west from Lehigh County in 1840 and resided in Venango County for a time, but by 1850 were living in Clarion County. It is presumed that James F. was born in the border area of these two counties. He was the youngest of eight children, the oldest being his only sister. His mother could not read or write, and it is doubtful whether his father could. James F. attended the neighborhood school, helped on the farm, and became familiar with the various other pursuits of his older brothers such as carpentry and butchering.

He was about nineteen years old when the Civil War ended. Three of his older brothers, Jacob, Hiram, and William, had served in the war.

His older brothers and his sister married, and bought farms in the area of Salem township, Clarion County just southeast of Mariasville. The oldest son, Samuel, is believed to have inherited the 540 acre homestead in Beaver township

About 1870 -1871 James F. married Adeline Kribbs.. They had a daughter, Bernice, and then a son Charles who was born in August of 1874. Sometime before their son was nine years old, Ada Kribbs died.

James F. remarried by 1882. His second wife was Olive Samantha Bower, who had been raised as a foster daughter by Jacob Beals, an older brother of James Francis. Olive's father, David Bower, had died shortly after the war ended, but with large debts, and her mother had given the children to be raised by others.

From the 1877 Caldwell Atlas of Clarion County PA, a portion of Salem Twp. In the upper left corner of this image (the northwest corner of Salem Twp. except for a north-extending panhandle) is the farm of D. Beels. This would be the homestead of David Beels, belonging in 1877 to his son Daniel Beels. The high point of the area, Beels Hill, is noted on the map.
The farm of James Francis Beals was immediately west of the Daniel Beels property, on the border of Clarion and Venango Counties. Sometime after 1870, the county line was re-drawn and the James F. Beals farm became part of Venango County.

Source Notes

  • Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania states that the Jacob Beals/Elizabeth Bryfamily settled in Venango County PA in 1839. Clarion County was formed in 1840, and the Beals homestead is in present day Beaver Twp., Clarion Co. It was there that James Francis Beals was born.
  • Regarding the missing 1860 Census, see the source notes and conjecture sections under Jacob Beals.
  • No mention of James, either of his wives, or any of his children can be found in the 1880 census for PA. It is likely that the household was skipped for one reason or another.
  • Per Margaret Kahle, Lizzie Rhoades Beals was buried at Wentlings corners. She was a daughter of Earnest Rhoads and Anna Dehner. She first married Benjamin R. Ashbaugh on 18 Mar 1874. They had 3 children: Clarence, Annie, and Vern Ashbaugh.
  • Beals family research by Ella Beals Wilson lists Lon Berlin as husband of Bernice Beals; Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association records list the name as Leander Berlin.
  • The listing of James Beals in the tax collector's ledger for Beaver Twp, 1874, implies that either he still owned property in Beaver Twp. at that date, or was perhaps still paying on a prior assessment. He resided in Richland Twp. by 1870.

Conjecture

  • It may be significant that a Daniel Biehl died in Lehigh County & is buried in the Fogelsville Union Cemetery. He was born in 1808, so is of the same generation as our Jacob Beals (b.1806). One could imagine this Daniel, (who possibly lived out his life, and certainly died, in Lehigh County), as possibly having an immigrant father also named Daniel. This older, conjectural Daniel would have been of the generation of the immigrant David Beels, and could have been his brother. If an older Daniel immigrated first and settled in the Lehigh area, his (brother) David could have been trying to follow his lead with the Lehigh County area as his hoped-for destination. Daniel immigrated through the port of Baltimore, ( rather than Philadelphia which would make more sense if he were trying to reach Lehigh County), but we know he was a stow-away, and may have taken what opportunity made itself available as to port of entry. David's son, Daniel Beels, could concievably have been named for such a brother. We have no evidence that David Beels ever resided in Lehigh County. He could have visited there however, and finding land scarce by the early 1800's, proceeded on westward, to Center County, then to the Venango/Clarion counties border area.

This leads to another possibility, that Daniel Biehl of Lehigh County (d. 1868) could have been the brother of our Jacob Beals, who is said to have been born in Berks Co., but presumably married in Lehigh County about 1828-29, resided there until between 1833and 1836, and then migrated to Clarion Co. by at least 1839. If this were the case, (that an older Daniel Biehl was the father of Jacob Beal and the brother of David Beel), then Jacob Beals (b. 1806) and Daniel Beels (b. 1792) were cousins, and their sons who owned neighboring farms (James Francis Beals and David Beels (b. 18270,) were 2nd cousins. By time period and coincidence of locations this is all possible, but at this point, all is HIGHLY conjectural.

See Tombstone Inscriptions, Fogelsville Union Cemetery, Lehigh Co., PA compiled by St. John's Church, at Lehigh County Historical Soc. Library, Allentown.
