18 History of Clarion County, PA 1887, ed. by A. J. Davis, Chap. 43, Ashland Twp.
Mr. Barnhart Martin settled upon the Martin farm in 1807. Mr. Martin was born October 12, 1786, in Germany, near the Rhine, but was educated in France. He was a man of letters, and esteemed very highly by all the old settlers. He was their counselor in all affairs, and was the first justice of the peace, holding that office till his death, which occurred February, 1866.
19 Margaret Kahle (Mrs. Alvin Kahle) correspondence. Margaret was for years on the board of Emlenton Cemetery, & has an extensive collection of obituaries for the region. "My late husband Alvin Kahle was the grandson of Burbage Martin Kribbs. Burbage Martin Kribbs and Adeline Kribbs Beals were brother & sister."

Source Notes

  • It is not known where Adeline and James F. Beals lived after marriage. He bought a farm in Richland Twp., Venango Co. PA, on the Clarion Co. line, but date of initial purchase not known. The inheritance of his second wife, Olive Samantha Bower, was used to pay for the farm, but he may have taken out a mortgage on it at time of his first marriage.
  • Jacob & Delilah Martin Kribbs were possibly buried on the lot of Barnhart Martin (per correspondence of Margaret Kahle, 2006).
  • The 1860 census for a John Kribbs household in Beaver Twp. has an Adaline Kribbs; date of birth would be about 1856.

Conjecture

It is curious that Adeline Kribbs (who married James F. Beals) had two cousins also named Adeline Kribbs. That is, three sons of Christian Kribbs (George, John, and Jacob) each gave one of their daughters the name Adeline (noted from 1860 census records). It was not their mother's name; Christian Kribbs married a woman named "Mary M.", surname unknown (possibly Maria Susanna Gutekunst). Christian immigrated in about 1776 with his father, brothers and sisters. His children wouldn't have known their Alsatian grandmother, but may have named daughters for her. Or perhaps Adeline was their maternal grandmother (Mary's mother)... The popular song "Sweet Adeline" was published much too late to have been the influence. See Christian Kribbs biography for notes from Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley Pennsylvania, Vol.2 pp. 555-556, John W. Jordan ed., Lewis Historical, NY 1913
