* The 1900 census reports both Jacob and Christina Kline to have been married 45 years, i.e. since 1855.  In the 1860 census Jacob is enumerated both at his parents home, and with his own wife and family in a separate location. This is also the case with his brother [[Henry Kline]].  It is possible both brothers were home to visit with Rebecca Klein who is believed to be a distant cousin, a descendant of immigrant [[Philip Wendel Klein]].  She too is enumerated with the John and Anna Klein family.

* Who is the mother of Charley Smith, listed in the 1900 census as a grandchild of Jacob and Christina Kline? Sarah E. Kline is age 37 & single in the 1900 census, suggesting she never married. Sisters Clara & Etta disappear after one census so appear to die in childhood. Sisters Mary Jane, Cornelia, and Naomi Laura all marry Weavers. This suggests the older two sisters, Emily/Francis or Susan/Ann to be the mother of Charley Smith.

* Who is the mother of Charley Smith, listed in the 1900 census as a grandchild of Jacob and Christina Kline? Ella Klein is said to have  had a child.    Sarah E. Kline is age 37 & single in the 1900 census, suggesting she never married. Sisters Clara & Etta disappear after one census so appear to die in childhood. Sisters Mary Jane, Cornelia, and Naomi Laura all marry Weavers, not Smith. This suggests the older two sisters, Emily/Francis or Susan/Ann to possibly be the mother of Charley Smith, if he is not Ella's child.
* Who were the 7 children (of 14 total) who survived until 1900? We have names of 13 children from the census records. None of the 7 deaths are identified with certainty. Only Sarah E. Kline is enumerated as alive in 1900 in the census collection above.
+
* Who were the 7 children (of 14 total) who survived until 1900?
** A 14th child born between two census could die young, never having been enumerated. A 14th child born in 1880 after the census, when Christina was 44, could have died.  Conversely, it could have survived; it would have been age 20 and out of the home by the 1900 census, and thus not enumerated.
+
** Mary Jane, whose husband remarried her sister in 1896, probably died, divorce being unlikely.
+

** Charles & Etta, both of whom disappear before age 10, possibly died.

NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Jacob Kline is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Jacob Kline, third child and third son of John and Anna Kline, was born while they still lived in the German community of Lower Macungie Township , Lehigh County PA. They attended the Zion's Lutheran Church and Jacob was baptized there, as were his two older brothers Henry and Reuben, and his sister Maria. In 1837 the family, along with two of Jacob's uncles (Philip Kline and Jacob Kline) migrated westward to Venango County PA. Initially they settled in Beaver Township, at Wentlings Corners, and the next four children were baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran church there, a union church with the Reformed congregation. After 10 years in the Wentlings Corners area (1837-1847), the family moved to Elk Township Clarion until 1850, and by 1860 the father had amassed sufficient savings from his farming to buy a farm in Ashland Township, near the Ashland Church.
Jacob was 25 years old in 1855 and married the 19 year old Christine "Tenna" Shreffler. Their first child was born that year, and over the next 23 or so years they had a total of 14 children, although 7 of them had died by 1900.
Jacob and Tenna settled initially in the border area of Richland and Cranberry Townships, Venango County, and Jacob worked as a shoemaker. By 1880 they had moved to Ashland Township, Clarion Co., and the 1900 census indicates that they lived in a rented house. Jacob died in 1905 at age 75, after a 3 year bout of paralysis. Jacob and Tenna are buried in the Valley Cemetery, Richland Township, Venango Co. PA.

Henry is enumerated at the home of his parents, although he is already married. He is also enumerated with his wife & children in Jefferson Co. PA. Rebecca Kline, born about 1829 is thought to be a distant cousin (see the Conjecture section, page of John Klein). Jacob is enumerated at his parent's home although he is (in 1900) reported to have married in 1855. Apparently both Henry & Jacob were visiting home, either because Rebecca was there, or to help out their parents on the farm.

  • The 1900 census reports both Jacob and Christina Kline to have been married 45 years, i.e. since 1855. In the 1860 census Jacob is enumerated both at his parents home, and with his own wife and family in a separate location. This is also the case with his brother Henry Kline. It is possible both brothers were home to visit with Rebecca Klein who is believed to be a distant cousin, a descendant of immigrant Philip Wendel Klein. She too is enumerated with the John and Anna Klein family.
  • Who is the mother of Charley Smith, listed in the 1900 census as a grandchild of Jacob and Christina Kline? Ella Klein is said to have had a child. Sarah E. Kline is age 37 & single in the 1900 census, suggesting she never married. Sisters Clara & Etta disappear after one census so appear to die in childhood. Sisters Mary Jane, Cornelia, and Naomi Laura all marry Weavers, not Smith. This suggests the older two sisters, Emily/Francis or Susan/Ann to possibly be the mother of Charley Smith, if he is not Ella's child.
  • Who were the 7 children (of 14 total) who survived until 1900?
    • Charles & Etta, both of whom disappear before age 10, possibly died.
    • Clara & William O., both disappear before age 15. They however could be working away from home.
  • Ella Kline does not appear in the census record of her family. Per Cammy Shreffler she did live with the family until her early teenage years, then was moved to Polk Center.
