1 1800 United States Federal Census, Maccongie Twp, Northampton Co, PA, Page 3. The census is undated. Lists families of:
Nicholas Klein: 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-45. The younger male and female do not fit for the children, all born after 1800)

John Klein: 1 male and 1 female >45. This fits for Johannes Peter Klein and his wife.
Jacob Klein: 4 males <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44. This fits the list of children for Johan Jacob Klein. There is an extra male 16-25, and the age for Elizabetha Vogele is off by a year.
Henry Klein: 1 male 16-26, 2 females <10, 1 female 16-26. No known relation fits these data.
These listing account for all the sons of Johannes Peter Klein except for the youngest, Johannes Klein, who should have been 26 in 1800. He could be one of the males living with his brothers.

3 Church Records of Longswamp Reformed Church 1748-1810, Folder #78, Longswamp Twp. collection, Berks Co. Genealogical Society Library, Kutztown, PA. , photocopy Feb. 1995 By E W Williams.
"Elisabetha Klein, dau. of Nicolaus & Elisabetha, born 14 Apr. 1775, bapt. 5 Jun., sponsors Johann Jacob Muller & Magdalena Klein (single)".
"Catharina Klein, dau. of Joh. Nicolaus & Magdalena Klein, born 17 Jan. 1800, baptized 24 Aug., sponsorsJohannes & Catharina Klein".
Ed. If Nicholas Klein of these Longswamp Church baptisms is the son of Johannes & Catharina Klein, he appears to have married Elisabetha first, then Magdalena Klein (a cousin?), with Maria Unknown of The Lehigh Church baptisms being then a thrid wife. The Reformed Church in Longswamp, Berks Co. was about 5 miles from the (Lutheran) Lehigh Church where Johannes & Catharina Klein were members.

"Nicholas Klein with Sarah Littweiler (single) sponsor Daniel Littweiler on 7 Jun 1778."
Ed. this event may have fallen between the first two marriages listed above. It is unclear whether the "single" notation applies to both Nicholas and Sarah. As Nicholas Klein, son of Johannes & Catherine, is of the 3rd generation of Kleins to live in the Lehigh/Berks border area, there may well be more than one Nicholas Klein in the church records.

See Longswamp Reformed Church Records for Klein & other surnames.
4 The History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon , PA by Alfred Mathews, p. 331-32 biography of Phillip Lauer.

"Phillip Lauer settled upon a tract of forty-seven acres of land which he bought April 10 A.D. 1810, from Nicholas Klein. This was a part of a farm of one hundred eighty acres which was surveyed and warranted to Casper Blylor, on the 29th day of April, 1746. It lies one mile east of the village of Alburtis, and is now occupied by his grandson, Jonas Lauer. May 28, 1827, Phillip obtained a patent thereof from the commonwealth upon giving an indenture of mortgage thereon for the sum of $141.29.

Conjecture

  • We expect that Nicholas Klein was named for an uncle Nicholas Klein. There is a Nicholas Klein and Margaretha, whose four children were born between 1776 and 1781, as recorded in Records of Lehigh Church/Zion's Lutheran Church. This older Nicholas is probably a brother of Johannes Peter Klein, but we have no record of him as such.
    * Johann Nicolaus Klein b. 5 March 1772; bapt 9 Apr 1772; parents Johannes Klein & Catharina; sponsors; Johan Nicolaus Klein & Catherine B. Keiser.

  • Nicolaus Klein & Margaretha;Elisabetha Klein Apr. 22, 1776. May 19, 1776; Andreas Eisenhard & wife.
  • Nicolaus Klein & Margaretha; Maria M. Klein Apr. 7, 1778. May 3, 1778; Michael Schmoyer & Magdalena.
  • Nicolaus Klein & Margaretha; J. Salomon Klein Nov. 29, 1779. Dec. 12, 1779; Johannes Koller & Gertraut Kinli.
  • Johann N. Klein & Margaretha; Salome Klein Apr. 10, 1781. May 13, 1781; Johannes Heller & Catharina Schmoyer.

Research Wishlist

Longswamp church records for a possible marraige record, Joh. Nicholas Klein & Magdalena Unknown; a death record of Magdalena Klein, or additional baptismal records for children of Nicholas & Magdalena. Needed to establish whether Magdalena was a first wife to Nicholas, son of Johannes & Catharina Klein, or if Nicholas, husband of Magdalena, is another person.
