Source Notes
- We have no record of Johannes & Margaretha Klein beyond the 1774 ship Phoenix' record of their entry at Philadelphia. Their son Johannes, named in the Wirthenbach & Essenheim church records, appears in the records of Macungie Twp., Northampton/Lehigh Co. PA at the same time as Philip Wendel Klein who was on the Phoenix in 1744.
- Macungie Township was originally part of Bucks County. Northampton Co. was created in 1752; at that time Macungie was divided into Upper Macungie, Lower Macungie , and Salisbury townships. Families on wide-scattered farms, with no near neighbors, functioned as isolated units. No villages of any importance existed in the early years, only gathering places such as taverns, mills, and churches. "As late as 1776 only two population centers existed in present-day Lehigh County: Allentown (officially callen Northampton, but known locally as "Allen's towne"), and Emmaus - but the latter remained closed to outsiders" (ie. non-Mennonites). The road from Macungie to Bethlehem was not built until 1760; before that people journeyed on foot using Indian paths.
From "Life in an Eighteenth-Century Moravian Community" by Jean Stauffer Hudson, printed in the 1978 Proceedings, Lehigh County Historical Society, pg.9 - Ships documents only recorded names of males over a certain age; for the ship "Phoenix" this age is not stated. Johannes Klein's son John Adam Klein is expected from the Essenheim church records to have been about 8 yrs. old at time of immigration. John Adam Klein's name is on the ship's list, but his brother Johannes, about 3 yrs old, is not listed. The church records mention 5 people in the family of Johannes Klein immigrating. The surviving children for Johannes Klein's first marriage, and their ages in 1744, would be Eva 16, Christina 14, and Johannes 11. Either the 5 people mentioned refers to 5 children in the family, or if it means 5 persons total then 2 children were left behind with relatives. If all 5 children immigrated, it is curious that the older son Johannes, apparently older than Joh. Adam, is not listed. The women were routinely not named on the ship's lists.
These small inconsistencies, plus the fact of Johannes Klein being an extremely common name in Germany, erodes the certainty that the Johannes Klein on the ship Phoenix is our ancestor. Arguing for the match is the fact that our Klein family lived in Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co. PA in proximity to the Philip Wendel Klein family, and that descendants of both these families eventually migrated to Clarion County in western PA, where they appear to have possibly known each other (see John Klein page, re. David Kline and descendants of Philip Wendel Klein). - The Nicholas Klein and the Magdalena Klein found in records of the Longswamp Reformed Church, Berks Co. PA, seem to be of the generation of Johannes and Margaretha Klein (Nicholas & Elisabetha as parents in 1775; Magdalena as sponsor in1776; Nicholas as sponsor in 1778). Their relationship if any to our direct line Kleins is unknown. If this Nicholas Klein at Longswamp is the same Nicholas who with wife Margaretha appears as parent in 1776-1781 at The Lehigh Church, then he was twice married.
- A record at The Lehigh Church shows a Nicholas Klein, (probably of the same generation or older than Johannes Peter Klein & Catharine) acting as a sponsor at the 1772 baptism of Nicholas Klein, son of Johannes Klein and Catharina. We expect the sponsor was an uncle of the child, and thus a son of Johannes Klein and Margaretha. As he does not appear in the German church records or the 1744 ship Phoenix' records, we expect he was born in the U.S. It appears he was single in 1772, possibly married to Elisabetha Unknown by Apr. 1775, (and possibly remarried to Margaretha Unknown by Apr 1776).
Conjecture
- PHILIP WENDEL KLEIN
Linking the Lehigh County Kleins of our ancestry to the Johannes Klein who arrived on the ship "Phoenix" in 1744 is largely based on the list of other Kleins who also arrived on the "Phoenix" (Thiebalt Klein, Philip Wendel Klein & John Adam Klein), and the evidence that they also settled in the immediate area of Lehigh & Berks Counties. Philip Wendel Klein settled in Weisenberg Twp., Lehigh Co. His sons were John Adam, John Jacob, Lorentz and Peter.
