Four months after his twentieth birthday, Johannes married Anna Margarethe Speck, also from Hitzerode and the daughter of Jakob Speck and Anna Catharina Becker. Anna Margarethe was nineteen when they married. The one son we know of was also named Johannes, born in 1822 when his mother was 37 and his father 38 years old. Nine years later the older Johannes died; Anna Margaretha survived him for at least twenty more years, living out her life in Hitzerode. Her son Johannes eventually took up farming. It appears that Anna Margarethe lived to see her son married. It is unclear whether she also lived to know that he and his wife emigrated to America in 1852. Presumably she is buried in Hitzerode.
