Johannes Friedrich
Johannes Friedrich, who was born in 1784, grew up in Hitzerode. His maternal Becker grandparents from Hitzerode had died twenty years earlier, and his paternal grandparents may or may not have been living, but if so, were some miles away in Kammerbach. As a young boy he may have accompanied his father on his wagon route, and later he took up that occupation himself.
Four months after his twentieth birthday, Johannes married Anna Margarethe Speck, also from Hitzerode and the daughter of Jakob Speck and Anna Catharina Becker. Anna Margarethe was nineteen when they married. The one son we know of was also named Johannes, born in 1822 when his mother was 37 and his father 38 years old. Nine years later the older Johannes died; Anna Margaretha survived him for at least twenty more years, living out her life in Hitzerode. Her son Johannes eventually took up farming. He may have lost access to the wagoner's route of his father, since he was too young to take it over when his father died. Or he simply lacked his father's training. Presumably, all families kept a farm of some size, at least enough for a garden and some animals. Their son Johannes perhaps fell to managing the farm when an older brother took over the wagon route. It appears that Anna Margaretha lived to see her son married. It is unclear whether she also lived to know that he and his wife emigrated to America in 1852. Presumably she is buried in Hitzerode.
