Johannes Friedrich was born in Kammerbach where he learned the trade his father Andreas had followed, that of wagon driver, or "carrier". While many people in that day might live and die without going far beyond the boundaries of their own village, the mobility of the wagon drivers led to intermarriage with families from farther afield. In 1774, when Johannes was twenty-nine, he married a widow of his same age, Anna Elisabeth nee Becker, widow of teacher Claus Fellmeden. Anna Elisabeth was from the village of Hitzerode some ten miles to the southeast of Kammerbach. They resided thereafter in Hitzerode and presumably had several children. The one son we know of, Johannes Friedrich, was born in 1784 after his parents had been married for ten years, and when his mother was thirty-nine years old. Anna Elisabeth and Johannes Friedrich lived to old age, he dying in 1817 at seventy-two years, and she in 1821, at seventy-six. They were both buried in Hitzerode.
Hitzerode, (now Hetzerode), is to the south of Frankershausen. Kammerbach is north of Frankershausen. All are small villages, in Hesse Germany.
