In the southern highlands of Germany, about twenty miles from the city of Kassel, lies the Berkatal valley near the Werra River. Several small villages here were home to the men and women who became the ancestors of John Frederick who came with his wife to America in 1852.
The area had at one time been invaded by the Franks, whose influence is seen in the names of villages such as Frankershausen and Frankerhein. Numerous hot springs exist in the area, and in that earlier era, significant deposits of salt were to be found. Salt was highly prized for use in food preservation in days before refrigeration, and the conquering Franks established trade routes for carrying the prescious salt back to France. Perhaps initially the salt was delivered as a form of tax or tribute to the conquerers. Later, however, the wagon dirvers would deliver salt to France and return with a wagon load of wine and supplies for use or for sale in Germany. Perhaps the local lords played a role, extracting a portion of the profit, but in any event, the occupation of "carrier" or "driver/merchant" played a central role in the economy of the villages and it was the occupation of generations of Friederich men.
Our earliest Friederich record is of one Andreas Friedrich, who lived in the village of Kammerbach, and whose occupation was carrier. He was probably born in the early seventeen hundreds, possibly about 1720 judging from the birth date of his son Johannes. Nothing further is known of Andreas, nor do we know who his wife was.

1 Research of Dr. Kurt Guenther, parish at Albungen where the registers (after 1804) of Hitzerode are preserved. (Older registers, since 1626, preserved at Frankershausen). Andreas Friedrich, carrier at Kammerbach. No dates. Indicated by Guenther to be the father of Johannes Friedrich(born 5.11.1745). This birth date is marked "calc.", so apparently not from a birth or baptismal record. Dr. Guenther does not indicated what exact church record links Andreas Friedrich to his son Johannes Friedrich.
