* John T. Wilson's manuscript, researched in about 1975-1985, lists the names of four children of James Wilson & Mary Baum: Tamson, Lot, William & Martha J.  We expect that there was no direct family memory of the James Wilson generation, and that he had access to the 1895 History of Butler County as his source. The census record suggests additional children Jesse, John and George.  However, it is possible that these were nephews and not children.  We have no corroborating documentation.

* 1900 census in Scioto Co. OH, Anna age 74, wife of Jesse Wilson, enumerated as having had 1 child, and that child still living in 1900 (but not present or named).  In the 1910 census Annie Wilson age 84, now a widow and back in Butler Co. PA, reports having had 12 children, 4 still living.

* 1860 census, Scioto Co. OH, Margery Wilson, living with family of Jesse Wilson and wife Anna.  Margery is age 36, older than Anna age 31.  Margery, same generation as Jesse but born in Ohio.  Margery not likely a sister-in-law; two of Jesse's brothers (Lot & William) remained in Butler Co. PA, and the third (George A.) was born 1843, so too young for Margery (born ~1824). Was she a cousin, the daughter of a brother of [[James Wilson]]?  Age-wise, she could possibly be a James Wilson's youngest sister, but her being born in Ohio would argue against that.

UNDOCUMENTED ANCESTRY

We find numerous sources with tantalizing data, but hesitate to adopt their findings when:

  • the lines of descent conflict from one web source to another.
  • documentation & sources are absent or insufficient
  • the sources listed are unavailable to us, so that scope or ambiguity can't be assessed

We offer this page as an ancestral possibility, with the caveat that it is unconfirmed by us.

Jesse Wilson is of direct interest to us because he appears in the 1850 census of Butler Co. PA in the James Wilson household, listed as the first son. Then he disappears from Butler County census records. He is not mentioned in the 1895 History of Butler County as a child of James Wilson, but possibly because he left the county at an early age and was lost to memory, or because of a simple error of recording. The History does say that James Wilson, after a brief time in Connoquenessing Twp., Butler Co. PA, moved on to Portsmouth, OH (Scioto Co.) where he died. (The fate of his wife Mary Baum is unclear). While we have failed to find census or burial records of James Wilson in Scioto & neighboring counties of Ohio, or across the river in Kentucky, a Jesse Wilson and wife Anna do appear in Scioto Co. OH beginning in 1860. We believe this possibly to be Jesse, the son of James Wilson. At present we have no corroborating sources, and without possibly a will for James Wilson, or something like church records that mentioned both, the relationship may remain inconclusive.

Research

  • Margery Wilson (see 1860 census with Jesse Wilson family) is not found in Ohio in 1850, 1870 census as Margery/Marjory. Various Margaret Wilsons appear, but not in Scioto Co., and not of appropriate age, unmarried.
  • Ancestry.com has a family tree with a Ruth Anna Muelheison b. 1824, Butler Co., who married a Jesse Wilson in 1852 (corresp. from Jan Finke, Dec.2009). (Note: son Samuel in 1860 census reports age 13, (born ~1847); not with Jesse in 1850 census; not found in census as Samuel Wilson except in 1860).
  • Anna and Jesse Wilson last appear in Scioto Co. Ohio in the 1900 census; Anna was age 74.
It has been suggested that an Annie Wilson age 84, who appears in Center Twp. Butler Co. PA in 1910, is possibly the same person, returned to Butler Co. as a widow after the death of Jesse. If so, then a) she had 12 children born instead of one child; b)Laura (Dengler) age 24/25, would be Annie's daughter; c)Joseph S. Dengler, age 32 in the 1920 census would be her grandson. However, we find an Ann Wilson age 74 in Center Twp. Butler Co. in the 1900 census, living as an "aunt" with the family of George & Leota Vangordes. This is likely the same individual as Annie Wilson of Center Twp. in the 1910 census.
