1 1850 United States Federal Census, West Connoquenessing, Butler County, PA, Page 101, lines 25-31 lists James Wilson, 45, married to Mary Wilson, 44. They are listed as living with five children: John (?) Wilson, 24; Lot Wilson, 19; William Wilson, 17; Martha J. Wilson, 15; and George A. Wilson, 7. All family members are listed as having been born in PA. Lot and William are listed a "laborers," John is listed as a "Tanner" or possibly "Farmer". James' occupation is possibly "Carpenter". Lot, William, Martha, and George are listed as having attended school within the year. The census is dated August 23, 1850.

3 1870 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co., PA, page 4. Census dated June 4 & 5, 1870.
Lines 29-33: Daniel Millison, 70, farmer, $5000 real, $800 personal property; Susanna, 57, keeping house, cannot write; Ellmer, 21, farmer; Mary Etta, 14; Carrie, 6. All born PA.
This is likely Mary E. Millison from the 1860 census (source 2) living with her grandfather, Daniel Millison. Ages for both are consistent with earlier census. (see page for Hiram Milhausen). Ellmer (Elmer?) is the youngest son of Daniel and a brother of Hiram Milhausen. The identities of the others on this page are unclear. Susanna could be a relative of Daniel; Carrie might be a sister of Mary Etta.

  • Descendants of James Wilson, dates, spouses, source data.
  • Middle name of Martha J. Wilson was "Jane".
  • Estate papers of Martha Jane Wilson Millison, dated May 1867; brother Lot in renouncement mentions that their father James Wilson is living out of state (i.e. still alive in May 1867).
  • Suzanna, who took in Martha's children (see 1870 census above) left a will mentioning a Cordelia; a Daniel who was a son of Jacob; 3 brothers, Samuel, Jacob & Abe Archer; & 2 sisters, Margaret Uber & Sarah Richardson. (Still trying to identify Susanna's family. There was no mention of Martha's children in the will.)

  • In an amendment note, Martha Wilson Milison's brother Lot Wilson seems to decline appointment as administrator and explains that Martha's husband Hiram Milison is deceased, and that her father is not in the state of Pennsylvania. (This implies that James Wilson was alive in 1867).

Source notes

  • The gravestone of Martha Jane Wilson (Milhausen)at Prospece, Emanuel Lutheran, is very worn and the inscription unclear. Three different transcriptions vary in their reading. We believe the unreadable portion, after the death date, is intended to be "in the 32nd year of her life". We do not know what year the stone was transcribed by the Butler Co. Cemetery Inventory. It appears now from census records that Martha J. was born about 1835-36. If she died in 1867, she would have been about age 32. She has not been found in the 1870 census, but it appears her child Mary E. and another child Carrie who may also be hers, are found living with her father-in-law, their grandfather. It appears Martha Jane died an early death in 1867. Her husband Hiram Milhausen has also not been found in 1870 census. He may have died (in the Civil War?), or may have simply left the children with his father while he lived elsewhere to work.
  • The name Millhausen is also seen as changed to Millison, Millson, Millron.
  • Neither Martha nor Hiram appears in the 1870 or 1880 Ancerstry.com registry search, under any of the name variations. Searching Muddy Creek Twp for simply "Hiram" or "Martha" gave no likely variants although there is a Martha Gallagher of the right age and with a daughter Mary in the 1870 census.
