NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Hiram Milhausen/Millison is not in my direct ancestor. He is related by his marriage to Martha Jane Wilson. Martha is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Hiram Milhausen appears to be the son of Daniel Millison and Margaret unknown (per 1850 census). The surname was apparently Muelheison originally, also recorded as Milhausen, Milhuisen, Millison and Milliron. Hiram Milhausen married Martha Jane Wilson, and had at least one child, daughter Mary E. (per 1860 census). It appears Martha Jane died at about age 32 in 1867. She is buried at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Prospect. They may thus have lived in Franklin Twp., Butler Co. after marriage. Hiram's life after 1860 has not been traced. No gravestone for him was found at Emanuel Lutheran. He may be buried there without a stone. The 1870 census suggests Hiram and Martha Jane may have had a second daughter, Carrie, living with her grandfather Daniel Millison in that year.

Note: The name "David" appears to be in error. Birth date matches that of Daniel Millison. The last 3 children of Daniel in 1850 are Joseph, Columbus, & Elmer. In 1860, "David" has children Joseph, Caroline, & Elmer, all exactly 10 years older than the 3 in 1850. Susan is likely the maiden sister of Daniel, seen in the 1880 census with two of Daniel's grand children.

His father was a native of Berks county, whence he removed to Westmoreland county, and afterwards to Butler county. After a few years' residence in Connoquenessing township, he removed to Portsmouth, Ohio, where he died. By his marriage to Mary Baum he became the father of ...Martha J., who married Hiram Milhuisen; Tamson, who married James Cratty; William, of Lancaster township, and Lott..." • Middle name of Martha J. Wilson was "Jane".
  • Per Civil War records on ancestry.com ,Hiram died May 12, 1864 in Spotsylvania, VA. On the military papers Hiram's name was spelled Millison &/or Milison, so there are duplicates. Also he appears to have been in 2 different regt's. the 62nd Infantry, Co. A & the 155th, Co. F. Five Millison brothers served in the war, with Hiram the only casualty.
  • Daniel Francis Millison (b. 1870) on 1880 census is a child of Jacob & Sarah Henry Millison. Jacob is brother to Hiram.

  • In an amendment note, Martha Wilson Milison's brother Lot Wilson seems to decline appointment as administrator and explains that Martha's husband Hiram Milhausen/ Milison is deceased, and that her father is not in the state of Pennsylvania. (This implies that James Wilson was alive in 1867).

CENSUS NOTES

  • 1850 census: Daniel Millison (b.~1800) & wife Margaret (b.~1807) are listed with 8 children, Hiram (b. 1830) the oldest, and Elmer (b. ~1847) youngest. Margaret would have been age 40 at the birth of Elmer.
  • 1860 census: David Millison (b.~1800) & Susan Millison (b. ~1812) are listed as living next to Hiram Millison. The 1850 census was not found for David Millison by the Ancestry.com search engine. Daniel Millison & wife Margaret not found in 1860 census. As the birth year appears to be the same for Daniel and David, and as the last 3 children of Daniel in 1850 appear with correct ages in the 1860 household of "David", it appears that Daniel & David are the same person. Caniel's wife Margaret died before 1860, and Susan (b. ~1812 per 1860 census) is not a 2nd wife, but Daniel's maiden sister Susannah (b. ~1909 per 1880 census). Susannah is found in 1880 caring for a niece and nephew. The nephew Daniel Francis is said to be the son of Jacob Millison (Daniel's son, Hiram's brother). The niece Carrie could be a child of either Hiram Milhausen or his brother Jacob.
  • 1870 census: Relationships to head of household are not given. Daniel Millison, head of household, is housing his son Elmer (a brother of Hiram per 1850 census); his granddaughter Mary E. Millison (daughter of Hiram per 1860 census); his sister Susanna (b. ~1813)(Hiram's aunt); Carrie,(born ~1864), who could be a child of Hiram & Martha Jane Wilson Millison, or of Jacob Millison. Carrie is not likely a child of Daniel & wife Margaret; Margaret would have been age 57 at Carrie's birth. Also, Carrie is listed after Mary Etta, who is not a child of Daniel & Margaret, but of their son Hiram.
  • 1870 census: Neither Martha nor Hiram appears in the 1870 or 1880 Ancerstry.com registry search, under any of the Millison name variations. Searching Muddy Creek Twp. for "Hiram" or "Martha" gave no likely variants, although there is a Martha Gallagher of the right age and with a daughter Mary in 1870. Other sources indicate both Hiram and Martha died before 1870.
  • 1880 census: "Maiden" Aunt Susan is housing the child Carrie(born ~1864), possibly a daughter of Hiram & Martha J. Millison), or of Jacob Millison; also a child Daniel (born ~1870). Per Jan Finke, Daniel Francis Millison (b.~870) was a son of Hiram's brother Jacob Millison and wife Sarah Henry. Carrie and Daniel are enumerated as "niece" and "nephew" but are in fact great-niece and great-nephew. Carrie, lived with Great-aunt Susannah in both 1870 and 1880, may be a child of either Hiram Millison or his brother Jacob. In addition to Carrie, Susannah cared for a child of Hiram in 1870, and a child of Joseph in 1880.

MILITARY NOTES

  • Pension application, source 9, indicates that Martha applied for widow's pension in August 1864. At her death, reapplication was made for James Millison, a minor child (not seen before in census records); the "Gdn." notation by his name possibly suggests that the application filed in his name by his guardian.
The record of this James Millison suggests the possibility that the child Daniel, age 10 in 1880 in his great-aunt Susan's home, is possibly this James. Ancestry.com translates his name in this census as Daniel F; however the letter is possibly a "J", the crossbar rounding back and connecting to the vertical stroke. His age is still problematic, born (1870) 3 years after Martha Jane's death (1867). In this family the ages do not seem to wobble from one census to the next; they appear to know their age. Daniel (James?) may be the exception, if he was born at his mother's death, and transferred to a maiden great-aunt's care.
  • The PA 62 Infantry was recruited in Butler, Allegheny, & other western PA counties. Men from Butler County were included in the 62nd but did not form an entire company. The 155th PA Infantry appears to have been recruited in Allegheny County. If there were Hiram Millison recruits in both these infantries, it is likely two different men. Both infantries were at Spotsylvania, where our Hiram Millison/Milhausen is said to have died. The 155th reports 18 killed at Spotsylvania; the 62nd also had a large number killed at Spotsylvania. The pension application with wife Martha is for Hiram of the 62nd Infantry.

Research

R1 * Various spellings of the Milhausen name are seen: Milliron, Muelheison... Hiram Milhausen and Ruth Anna Muelheison were likely related, possibly cousins. No link has been found, although both families lived in Butler County (John Milliron & daughter Ruth Anna & family in Connoquenessing Twp; Hiram & father Daniel in Muddy Creek Twp. Ruth Anna Muelheison married Jesse Wilson (brother of Martha Jane Wilson) and migrated to Scioto Co. Ohio; they are buried at Freeport OH in the Greenlawn Cemetery there. As Hiram has not been traced in Butler Co. after 1860, it is possible that he also migrated westward. There is a large Millirons gravestone at Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth OH, and transcriptions on the Greenlawn Cemetery website for two Millirons women of a later era: (Section D) Millirons, Marie Sept 19, 1909 - ____; Nora F. April 15, 1889 - Aug 29, 1980.
R2 * According to the Vest, O'Roark etc. family tree on Ancestry.com, there is a David Muelheison, b. 1822,Butler Co. (no spouse listed), son of John Milliron & Elizabeth Buchle. He's a brother of Ruth Anna Muelheison, so not old enough to be the David living next to Hiram in 1860. No David was found in the generation of John Milliron, Ruth Anna's father. One generation older, a John David Muelheison b. 23 Feb 1778 in Westmoreland Co. PA, married Barbara Cribbs (b. ~1780 in Germany), children, if any, not listed. His parents were John Philip Muelheison (1755-1836) and Anna Maria Barbara Altman (1759-?). John David Muelheison was a first cousin of John Milliron, so of the right generation to be the father of Hiram Milhausen; John David appears to have been about 52 yrs older than Hiram.
John David's father was John Philip Muelheison (1755-1836); John Milliron & John David's grandfather was John Jacob Muelheison (1730-1786, born in Germany & migrated to Westmoreland Co. PA)

R3 * "Reproduction Map of Butler Co. 1858 Pennsylvania", by Violet Covert, pp 46-49, Connoquenessing Twp. index lists A. Millison and W. Millison. The survey map shows their properties near the northwest corner of the township, on Crab Run which flows into the Little Connoquenessing. Present day map indicates their land would have been just west of Rt. 528 on Harmony Rd. No Millison/Millron etc. are found in the Franklin Twp. index for the 1858 map. In Muddy Creek Twp. is found Daniel Milleron with property on the southern border of the township. This would have been about 2 miles northwest of the Millison properties in Connoquenissing Twp.
The Vest, O'Roark etc. website lists Daniel Muelheison (1800-1872)as a brother of John Milliron whose daughter Ruth Anna married Jesse Wilson.
