Winnifred May Kline, who went by Winnie, was born on 10 March 1888 to John Abram Kline and Elizabeth Anna Frederick. As a young woman, she took a job as a housekeeper in the home of James Francis Beals. There she met James Francis Beals' son, James Elgie Beals. A courtship ensued, and on 12 October 1910, Elgie and Winnie were married. Elgie was twenty-one, Winnie twenty-two. The marriage was at Winnie’s home, the John Abram Kline and Ella Frederick Kline farm in Richland Township, Venango County.

The Kline/Klein family is of German heritage. It is believed that the family originated in Essenheim, in the Palatinate southwest of Mainz, leaving on the ship “Phoenix” on 20 Oct. 1744. The family settled into a German community that included many other Klein families, in an area of Northampton County, Pennsylvania.  This area later became Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh County.

The couple lived for some years on the farm of Elgie’s father. Records show that Elgie bought a portion of farmland from his father in 1910, and more of it in 1911. Their first two children were born there. James Loy Beals, known as Loy, was born 8 February 1912, and Ella May Beals, known as Ella, was born 28 September 1917.
+
The great-grandparents of Winifred Kline moved west to Clarion County in 1837, settling in Ashland Township. The family had for generations spoken German and attended churches, mostly Lutheran, where German was the language of the records and the gravestones. The spoken language of the community became a mixture of German and English.  The last immigrant of the famiy, Winnie’s maternal grandparents Anna Catherine Kenemuth and John Frederick, arrived in 1852, and they also settled in Clarion County. They brought a new infusion of German culture and reliance on the German language. The Klein name spelling was changed to Kline in the mid-eighteen hundreds.  In the era of the World Wars, some families changed it further to Cline.

In 1915 Winnie’s father, John A. Kline, died, and at some point Elgie and Winnie bought the Kline farm. An addition to the farmhouse was built for Ella Kline, Winnie’s mother. Winnie’s youngest sibling, Mary Philistia Kline, was still living at home as well. Ella Kline died unexpectedly after a very brief hospital stay, from undiagnosed cancer, on 11 July 1921. (The apartment served in later years as the first home after their marriages of at least two of the children, Loy and Ella). After the move to the Kline farm, a daughter Bertha Irene Beals, known as Bertha, was born 6 May 1922, and a son Robert Elgie Beals, known as Robert or Bob, was born 13 November 1926.

*Winnifred May Kline's name is miss-stated in various places. Source 5 (1940 Federal census) has her first name as "Winiford" which is a male name. "Winnifred" appears in various of her records with either 1 or 2 "n"s. Her death certificate miss-stated her middle name as "Maomi" (a miss-understood attempt at Mamie?). This was further changed in one of her obituaries, to "Naomi".  Her middle name was definitely "May", which she also gave to her first daughter, Ella May BealsThe death certificate appears with the correction written in, and "Maomi" crossed out.
There is some confusion as to the spelling of Winnifred May Kline's first name. Several reputable sources list it as "Winnifred" while others list it as "Winifred." No definitive source seems to be available, and it is possible that the "actual" spelling of her name was never really constantFor the purposes of this family tree, I am using the spelling used most frequently in the source documents, "Winnifred."
