Revision as of 10:03, 7 March 2010

James Cratty came from Chambersburg PA to Butler Co. PA in the early 1800's and settled on land later owned by Joshua McCandless. With him came brothers Robert and Thomas and sister Rachel. James married first Mary Johnston, daughter of Bernard Johnston, and had two daughters. He married second to Jane English who bore 14 children (6 sons & 8 daughters). He was a member of Mt. Nebo Presbyterian Church. He served in the War of 1812, a member of Captain Martin's company. His oldest son, Thomas Cratty, raised a family in Franklin Twp. Butler Co. His second son, James Cratty, Jr., apparently died in the Civil War; his remaining four sons were all dead by 1895.
(Per the 1895 History of Butler Co. PA, pg. 1254-55; and the Civil War record of James Cratty (Jr.))

3 1985 History of Butler County, Brown & Co., p.1254-55. Biographical sektches of James Cratty, Sr., and of Thomas Cratty (oldest brother of James Cratty, Jr.):

"James Cratty came to Muddy Creek township, Butler county, form the vicinity of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, early in the present century, and settled upon the land now owned by Joshua McCandless. He was accompanied to this county by his brothers, Robert and Thomas, and sister Rachel ...". He married 1st Mary Johnston, dau. of Bernard Johnston; 2nd Jane English. He had a son James (deceased at time of writing).
Note: We expect it is this James Cratty's son, James Jr., who married Tamson Wilson. James Cratty's first son Thomas had a son named James A., but as Thomas was born in 1811, he is too young to be the father of the James Cratty who is married to Tamson and 38 yrs old (born about 1822) in the 1860 census.
