NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Sarah Hoge/Hogg is not in my direct ancestry. She is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Sarah Hoge/Hogg was born in May, 1753 in Philadelphia, to Robert & Letitia Hoge/Hogg, shortly after they had immigrated from County Down, Ireland in 1752. Her father was born in Scotland, and it is possibly that her mother, born in Northern Ireland, was also of Scottish descent. A brother born in Ireland in 1751 is reported to have died at age 2 (in 1753) in Philadelphia. The family located in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland Co. PA (now Juniata Co.) in the spring of 1754. Sarah thus grew up as the oldest of the suviving children, with three younger sisters, and one brother. Another brother born in 1764 died in infancy.

In June of 1756 Indian incursions along the Juniata forced the Hoge family to flee to Carlisle, where they stayed until fall of that year. Twice more they took refuge in Carlisle. Sarah would have been three years old when these incidents began. Sarah married first to George McCullough, a veteran of the American Revolution. George had immigranted in 1774 with his two cousins, Thomas & John McKee. The 3 young men settled in Tuscarora Valley, PA and each married a daughter of Robert Hoge. George McCullough and Sarah Hoge are known to have had two daughters, Letitia and Anna McCullough, named in the will of their grandfather Robert Hoge. George died in 1783 per source at age 32 yrs, from the bite of a rabid dog.
Sarah remarried in (1781 per source; expect 1787) to Hamilton Graham, and had at least three children - Robert, George and Jane Graham, who are also named in the will. When Sarah was 48 years old, and twice married, her father, Robert Hoge, died on his farm in Juniata Co. 25 Jan. 1798, aged 80 years. Letitia survived him until 8 Mar. 1812, when Sarah Graham would have been age 62 years. Her parents are buried in the McKee graveyard. Sarah died in 1828, at age 75, near Waterford in Juniata Co. PA.

  • Dr Egle includes a statement of Lettitia Lytle, daughter of George McCullough: George McCullough came from Ireland to America prior to the Revolution. He was a stone mason by trade, landed at Philadelphia and from there went to Northumberland, to erect a barn for a Quaker, was drafted about 1774. (In Northumberland) he met with Jno. McKee and others from Tuscarora Valley, and whom he accompanied home after the service of the draft,&there he met Sarah Hoagg, in 1775 whom he married, and resided there when he again was called into service, about 1776. , He served his time, returned home to farming, until again called out in 1778. Hugh Gray was with him in '78. Lettitia was born in Feb. '79, after his return from the war. He died in Sept. '84 leaving but two children living, Lettitia and Ann, the latter 2 years younger than the older. "My mother again married, a man the name of Hamilton Grimes, in the year of '89, by whom she had two sons and a daughter, named Robert, George and Jane, and lived on in Tuscarora Valley to her death in 1829 or 1830. I married Robert Lytle on 6th July 1802 and lived with him until August 1847 when he died at Hollidaysburg Blair County, Pa. My sister Ann McCulloch married Moses Sturgeon in 1800 and lived with him until 1850, when he died. She died in 1851, both died in Shelby County, Ohio."
  • Note added by Leonard Lytle, re. the Sturgeon family:<br. I have some letters written by Mrs. Margaret Townsley of Cedarville, Ohio, in 1887. She was gathering material for Egle's "Pennsylvania Genealogies" and I think that she furnished the information from which this manuscript was prepared by Dr. Egle. Miss Catherine I. Egle informs me that she cannot find the papers on the Sturgeon family and thinks they may have been sold. In order to preserve what information I have on the Sturgeon family I gave the following extracts from the letters of Mrs. Margaret Townsley:
"Letitia McCullough was the only sister of Ann McCullough, wife of Moses Sturgeon, and their daughter Lettitia Sturgeon was my mother. She first married John Campbell of Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio in 1821. To them 2 sons and 1 daughter was born. Mr. Campbell died she again married my father John Dalzell, in 1834 and to them were born two children, myself and a brother who died in infancy. My mothers name was Letitia, by that ever dear and loved name we called our daughter, Orrel Lettitia. She died at the age of 2 years and 3 months. Of our four children we have but one living, a son John Dalzell Townsley, now 25 years of age, residing in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, there in business but not married."
The postmaster at Cedarville, Ohio, informed me in 1921 that Mrs. Townsley died years ago and that he thinks her son John Dalzell Townsley is now living in Kansas City. I have not been able to get in touch with him.

Source Notes

  • In the copy of Dr. Engle's manuscript (Source 3), the transcriber appears to have miss-transcribed the marriage date of Sarah Hoge to 2nd husband Hamilton Graham, as 1781. Her first husband died in 1783 (per this same source), his last child having been born in 1781. Perhaps the date of the 2nd marriage was originally written as 1787, which could look like 1781 easily; the first child of this marriage was born in 1788.
  • Tuscarora Valley was in Cumberland County until 1789 when it became part of Mifflin County. That portion of Mifflin County became part of Juniata County in 1831.
  • The surname of Sarah Hoge's second husband is given as Graham in the manuscript of Dr. Egle; however, that same manuscript contains a statement of Letitia Lytle, a daughter of George McCullough, who says that her mother's second husband was Hamilton Grimes. We find Hamilton Grims listed in the 1790 census; no Hamilton Graham was found in Pennsylvania in the 1790 census. It is possible that both spellings were used in the family. Later census records are inconclusive on this point. No individuals matching the descendants of Hamilton Graham and Sarah Hoge, as given by Dr. Egle, have been identified.
  • Ellen Hockenberry (born around 1790), daughter of John Hockenberry, married a William Graham. We speculate this William could have been a nephew of Hamilton Graham who appears to have resided in Tuscarora Valley. The Hockenberry family resided on the south side of Tuscarora Mtn., in Horse or Burns Valley. However, John Hockenberry is said to have moved west to Butler Co. by 1803; Ellen would still have been a young child. William Graham, if from the Tuscarora Mtn. area, would have to have also migrated to Butler Co. before marriage.

George McCullough head of a household that includes 3 males under age 16, 1 male over age 16, and 3 females.
* Note: The George McCullough entry (31300) could be the spouse of Sarah Hoge but the 3 boys in the census are not known to be Sarah's; the 2 daughters are documented elsewhere. This appears to be the closest match, from 5 George McCulloughs listed in PA in 1790.

Listed in the same township are the households of a Robert McKee (12200); Robert Hogg (14200); William Robinson (10100); John Robinson (14200). These surnames are those of the spouses of the children of Robert Hoge, though not these individuals. The cluster of names suggests that this could be the community of residence of Robert Hoge's family.
