James Hoge was born in 1766 in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland County (present Juniata County),to Scottish parents Robert & Letitia Hoge who had immigrated to America in 1752. James met Mary Irwin who had also been born in Tuscarora Valley, apparently of Irish descent, and they married in 1789. Their first 3 children were probably born there. Despite having been given a 200 acre farm by his father, James Hoge moved westward in 1798 and settled in Centre Twp., Butler Co. PA for a time, on 150 acres of land. In 1803 he owned 150 acres in Middlesex Twp.; this probably represents the division of Centre Twp into additional townships, rather than a change of location for the Hoges. James and Mary had 3 more children, presumably born in Butler County. By 1830 he lived in Slippery Rock Twp., and there he died. He may have still retained the farm given him by his father,or he may have inherited his father's farm, for James Hoge's will speaks of proceeds from land in Turbett Twp., Juniata County. The farm in Slippery Rock Twp. passed to his 3rd child, James Irvin Hogue who lived there until he died; and then to James I. Hogue's son, Archibald Hoge.

(posted on Keystone Corner, MyFamily.com)
John Ralston, Sr., was born near Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1776, son of William Ralston, there grew to maturity, and subsequently settled in Lawrence county. In 1801 he traded his land in Lawrence county for 800 acres in Brady township, Butler county, upon which he build a cabin and settled the same year. Some time after effecting a settlement he erected a grist mill, also a saw mill, and operated them until his death, in the spring of 1850. They are now known as Croll's mills. Mr. Ralston owned 800 acred of land, which his children inherited at his death. He married Betsey Sharp, a daughter of James Sharp, who founded the village of Sharpsville, Mercer county, and their children were as follows: William, who built Ralston's mill, and died in Centre township; Jane, deceased wife of William Hoge; James, who died in Venango county; John, who died in Iowa; Elizabeth, who married John Snyder; David, a resident of Nebraska; Polly, wife of Henry Hilger; Elim, who died in Iowa; Susan, who married Henry Wolfod; Samuel, who died in Slippery Rock, and George, who died in Clay township. Mr. Ralston was a soldier in the War of 1812.

Source notes

  • The History of Venango County PA, p. 831 biography of Thomas Hoge gives the names of the parents of Mary Irwin as James Irwin and wife Martha (surname not given). The reliability of the author is however questionable. This source lists the parents of Thomas Hoge as Mary Irwin and John Hoge (rather than James Hoge), and it lists his grandparents as Robert and Mary Hoge, (rather than Robert and Letitia). These variances in given names , between this source and The Descendants of Robert Hoge, leave the names in question, without additional evidence.
Donald Hogue, g-g-g-grandson of James Hogue, has the parents of Mary Irwin as James Irwin and Agnes (surname unknown).
  • Cheryl Hudson - Mar 29, 2010 Posted on The Keystone Corner, subsection of MyFamily.com, regarding the biography of John Ralston and his daughter Elizabeth: "Elizabeth's husband John was the son of Conrad & Ann Mary Snyder. She was born on May 2 1809 and died June 20 1893. She is buried in Upper Muddy Creek Cemetery."

Census Possibilities for James Hoge

  • 1790 United States Federal Census, Mifflin County, PA (page 2), lists James Hogue (1 male<16, 1 male >16, 2 females). Mifflin Co. is adjacent to Juniata Co. (Mifflin abuts the northwestern border of Juniata.) The older male in this census is consistent with our James Hogue ( age24 in 1790), but the indication of two children by 1790 does not match what we currently know.

  • | 1810 United States Federal Census, Chenango Twp, Mercer Co, PA, page 3. Census not dated.
    Family of Jame Hoge: 1 male <10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 26-44.
This census could correspond to James Hogue (age 44) and Mary Irvin (age >40). The census accommodates one son under age 10; it does not however account for the other four sons and a daughter.

  • 1820 United States Federal Census, Shenango Twp, Mercer Co, PA, page 2. Census not dated.
    Family of Jame Hoge: 1 male 10-15, 1 male >44, 1 female <10, 1 female >44.
This census could correspond to James Hogue (age 54) and Mary Irvin (age >50). The younger male could be one of the younger sons; however the other sons are not accounted for, and our James Hogue would not have had a daughter under age 10 in 1820.

  • 1820 United States Federal Census, Slippery Rock Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 5 of 6, family headed by James Hoge: 1 male 16-25, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-45. These ages rule out this particular family, though the household is listed next to that of Luke Covert, then William Hoge, then Jacob Covert. It is likely that there is a connection between this family and our direct line; some further analysis should be undertaken.
