NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Ruth Anna Muelheison is not in my direct ancestor. She is the wife of Jesse Wilson who is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Lot Wilson's brother, Jesse Wilson appears in the 1850 census of Butler Co. PA in the James Wilson household, listed as the first son. Then he disappears from Butler County census records. He is not mentioned in the 1895 History of Butler County as a child of James Wilson, but possibly because he left the county at an early age and was lost to memory, or because of a simple error of recording. The History does say that James Wilson, after a brief time in Connoquenessing Twp., Butler Co. PA, moved on to Portsmouth, OH (Scioto Co.) where he died. Jesse Wilson and wife Anna appear in the Scioto Co. OH census beginning in 1860. The gravestones of Jesse & Ruth Anna Wilson are in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth OH.
Ruth Anna Muelheison was a daughter of H. Millison, per Ohio death records. In Butler County PA, a Hiram Milhausen married Jesse Wilson's sister, Martha Jane Wilson. (Hiram's records are also found with Milliron & Millison spellings.) An unknown David Millison is living next door to Hiram in 1860. The H. Muelheison, father of Ruth Anna, could likely have been a brother of David Millison.
Jesse and Anna may have had one son, Samuel, or may have raised him as their step-son. The 1900 census states that Anna was the mother of 1 child, still living. The 1860 census shows Anna & Jesse living with a 13 year old Samuel (so born ~1847) and an unknown Margery Wilson age 36. Samuel is listed before Margery, so presumably is the son of Jesse & Anna rather than of Margery. However, the 1900 census indicates that Jesse & Anna had been married for 40 years (i.e. married about 1860, 13 years after the birth of Samuel). This census record may be in error, but Samuel may also be an adopted child. If Jesse and Anna had been married for 13 years with no children, it is reasonable that they could have then taken in a child. It does appear from the presence of Margery Wilson in their home in 1860 that there were Wilson kin in the area. Margery is not known to be a sibling of Jesse, but that is one possibility. Another is that she was a cousin, and that Jesse & his father James followed a brother of James into the Scioto County Ohio area.

Source Notes

  • 1860 census, Scioto Co. OH, Margery Wilson, living with family of Jesse Wilson and wife Anna. Margery is age 36, older than Anna age 31. Margery, same generation as Jesse but born in Ohio. Margery not likely a sister-in-law; two of Jesse's brothers (Lot & William) remained in Butler Co. PA, and the third (George A.) was born 1843, so too young for Margery (born ~1824). Was she a cousin, the daughter of a brother of James Wilson? Age-wise, she could possibly be a James Wilson's youngest sister, but her being born in Ohio would argue against that.
  • In northern Scioto County OH, Valley Twp lies east of the Scioto River and Morgan Twp west of the river. Lucasville appears to be in Valley Twp. From the 1870 census (Samuel Wilson at Lucasville, Morgan Twp., and the 1880 census (Jesse Wilson at Lucasville, Valley Twp.), both families probably lived near the Scioto River, in the Lucasville P.O. area.

Research

  • Margery Wilson (see 1860 census with Jesse Wilson family) is not found in Ohio in 1850, 1870 census as Margery/Marjory. Various Margaret Wilsons appear, but not in Scioto Co., and not of appropriate age, unmarried.
  • Samuel , son of Jesse Wilson, in 1860 census reports age 13, (born ~1847); not with Jesse in 1850 census; not found in census as Samuel Wilson except in 1860).
  • "Reproduction Map of Butler Co. 1858 Pennsylvania", by Violet Covert, pp 46-49, Connoquenessing Twp. index lists A. Millison and W. Millison. The survey map shows their properties near the northwest corner of the township, on Crab Run which flows into the Little Connoquenessing. Present day map indicates their land would have been just west of Rt. 528 on Harmony Rd. No Millison/Millron etc. are found in the Franklin Twp. index for the 1858 map. In Muddy Creek Twp. is found Daniel Milleron with property on the southern border of the township. This would have been about 2 miles northwest of the Millison properties in Connoquenissing Twp.
The Vest, O'Roark, etc. website lists Daniel Muelheison (1800-1872), a brother of John Milliron whose daughter married Jesse Wilson.
  • Anna and Jesse Wilson last appear in Scioto Co. Ohio in the 1900 census; Anna was age 74. The gravestone of Ruth Anna Wilson, next to that of Jesse Wilson, has her death date to be 1909.
It has been suggested that an Annie Wilson age 84, who appears in Center Twp. Butler Co. PA in 1910 living with the family of August Dengler, is possibly the same person, returned to Butler Co. as a widow after the death of Jesse. However, this Annie Wilson reports having had 12 children instead of one child as reported by Annie wife of Jesse Wilson. We find an Ann Wilson age 74 in Center Twp. Butler Co. in the 1900 census, living as an "aunt" with the family of George & Leota Vangordes. This is likely the same individual as the Annie Wilson of Center Twp. in the 1910 census. At this point, we discount the connection to the Dengler family.
