Source Notes

  • It seems likely that the Jane J. Church in [6] is widow of Langdon W. Church, but only her name currently connects them. She is listed as a "mother-in-law" in the 1900 census, presumably of the head of household, which would make her Eunice A. Hurley's mother. The age of Eunice in 1900 suggests that she is either Anna L. or Louella Church, neither of which are close matches for name. The missing obit for Amie Eunice Hurley may shed some light on this.

Research

Ref. Num. Description Image of original
R1 Personal Research of Laurence Seitz. Mr. Seitz has prepared an in-depth document describing the descendants of Samuel Church and Elizabeth Stickney. While most data in this document are thoroughly sourced, a few items--particularly those relating to Samuel and Elizabeth--are referenced to public trees found on Ancestry.com. We do not consider Ancestry.com trees to be a reliable source of good data, so anything found here that is only referenced to this source should be considered conjectural at best. Because Mr. Seitz has done such a good job of referencing his sources, we have been able to duplicate many of those sources above.

Current items on this page only found in the Seitz document:

  • Any information regarding Langdon's involvement in the Civil War
  • Most of the information we know about Marion Harvey Church
  • Did a manual search through all 52 pages of the Sugar Creek, Vigo Co., IN 1870 Census records and found no trace of this family of Churchs. Page 21 has the Warren/Julia family, page 22 has both the Erastus/Lucy and Oscar/Martha families. Page 24 has Chester Church living with the "Abraham Shuts?" family. That's it for Church names. This family is in Sugar Creek in 1860 and 1880. Seitz's document indicates that Langdon served in the Civil War in 1865, and ended up in Nashville; perhaps the family was down there for a bit?
  • There is an obit for an "Amie Eunice Hurley" in the 24 Jul 1940 issue of Terre Haute Tribune. This could be the connection between the 1900 Eunice A. Hurley and one of Langdon/Jane's children seen in 1880 (most likely either Anna L. or Louella). Local copies available at the Vigo County Public Library.
