Samuel is 74 and Elizabeth 70 in 1840. This is Samuel Church living with his wife and two families of his children and grandchildren. Erastus Church is 32 and Caroline Church 8 and the four oldest sons of Erastus and Lucy are 7, 5, 3, and 1 in 1840. These all agree with persons in the above list. Lucy Whitten should be 32 also and this is not in agreement.

3	1860 United States Federal Census, Clark County, York, IL, Page 19 lines 25-28, lists Jefferson S. Murphy, 27, living with Caroline Murphy, 28, Marrion Murphy, 3, and Erastus W. Murphy, 5 months. Jefferson is a Blacksmith. Jefferson was born in Virginia, Caroline in Vermont, Marrion in Indiana, and Erastus in Illinois.
4	1870 United States Federal Census, Vigo County, Sugar Creek, IN, Page 22 lines 1-10, lists Erastus Church, 62, living with Lucy Church, 57, Geo Church, 24, Lucy A. Church, 22, Orange Church, 20, Caroline Murphy, 38, Marion Murphy, 13, Willie Murphy, 10, Oscar Church, 30, and Martha Church, 22. Oscar and Martha are listed as being a separate family but living in the same dwelling; they were married the previous November. Geo, Lucy A., Orange, Marion, and Oscar were born in Indiana. Erastus, Lucy, and Caroline were born in Vermont. Willie was born in Illinois. No one had parents of foreign birth. Marion and Willie were in school. Everyone is either a farmer or a house keeper, except for Caroline who is a seamstress.
5	1880 United States Federal Census, Vigo County, Sugar Creek, IN, Supervisor's District 4, Enumeration District 200, Page 8 lines 35-37, lists J. P. Hubbard, 65, living with his wife Caroline R., 47, and her son Erastus W. Murphy, 20. Erastus is listed as the "Son" directly below Caroline, but has a separate family number, suggesting that he is Caroline's son but not J.P. Hubbard's son. J.P. and Erastus are farmers, Caroline is a housekeeper. J.P. was born in New Hampshire, his father in Massachusetts, and his mother in New Hampshire. Caroline was born in Vermont, her father in Vermont, mother in New Hampshire. Erastus was born in Illinois, his father in Virginia, his mother in Vermont. Erastus is listed as suffering from "Spinal Fever."
6	U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men, shows Jefferson S. Murphy of Darwin, IL, enlisting on 21 Jun 1861 as a Private to serve the state of Illinois in the Civil War. He is listed as having been a POW and not having survived the war. 7	Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 includes a record for Jefferson S. Murphy. It lists the names of his dependents as "Widow: Murphy, Caroline R." and "Minor: Hubbard, Caroline R. (Gdn.)." His service is listed as "H, 21 Ill. Inf." [Company H, Illinois 21st Infantry Regiment]. The date of filing for the widow is listed as 13 May 1864, application #51654 and certificate #70623. For the minor, the date of filing is listed as 30 July 1875, application #219446 and certificate #169841.
8	Church family bible records contain birth, marriage, and death dates and locations for numerous members of the Church family. Relevant to this page, Erastus Church was born in Orange Co., VT, on 9 Jan 1808 and died 3? Sept 1877 at the age of 71. Lucy H. Whitten was born in Sullivan Co., NH, on 6 Oct 1807. They were married at Rochester, VT, on 4 May 1828. Carolyn R. Church was born at Rochester, VT, on 19 Nov 1831. She married Jefferson S. Murphy on 31 Oct 1855 in Terre Haute, IN. He was born in VA on 22 Mar 188?3. Marion A. Murphy was born at Marion Co., IN, on 21 Oct 1856. Willie E. Murphy was born at York, IL, on 25 Mar 1860.
9	Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941, has a record for Caroline R. Church marrying a Jefferson S. Murphy on 31 Oct 1855 in Vigo Co., IN.
10	Marriage License for Caroline R. Church and Jefferson S. Murphy. They received their marriage license on 30 Oct 1855, were married on 31 Oct 1855, and filed their license with the county on 10 Nov 1855. This all occurred in Vigo Co., IN.
11	City directory for Terre Haute, IN, dated 1887, pg. 563, includes an entry for Caroline R. Hubbard. Her contact information is listed as "35, Macksville."
12	Marriage License for J. P. Hubbard and Caroline Murphy. They received their marriage license on 7 Dec 1874, were married on 10 Dec 1874, and filed their license with the county on 8 Jan 1875. This all occurred in Vigo Co., IN. Note that this document refers to J. P. Hubbard as "Joseph P. Hubbard" at the top and "Joshua P. Hubbard" at the bottom. There is a hand-written note in the upper-left reading "Don't Publish", underlined twice.

• [12] gives two different names for Carolyn R. Church's second husband, J.P. Hubbard. The first is "Joseph" and the second is "Joshua." There is an 1874 map of Sugar Creek Twp. which shows land owned by E.W. Church and E. Church nearby a block of land owned by a "Joshua Hubbard." There is another nearby block of land owned by "J.P. Hubbard" which suggests that perhaps there was a Joshua Hubbard that was separate from "J.P." More investigation will be necessary to determine what Carolyn's second husband's first name really was.

Research

• I spoke with the Rochester, VT, clerk's office (Joanne McDonnell) and she indicated that they have no records at all for Erastus Church, Lucy Whitten, Caroline/Carolyn Church, or Erastus W. Church. The only Church birth records they have are from the 1900s. She suggested that I try neighboring towns such as Hancock and Ripton.
