Immigrant 1856

Jacob Kuhnemuth was from Frankershausen, located in the county of Eschwege, state of Hesse, Germany. The house where he lived and raised his children still stands today at 49 Am Wasser Strasse. His occupation was "fuhrmann and handelsmann", or wagon driver & trader. The Kuhnemuths worshiped at the Evangelical Church in Frankershausen, built in 1827 on the site of an earlier twelfth century church. The lower part of the present day tower is a relic of the earlier church. Next to the church is the old Kirchbergschule (church hill school) that the Kuhnemuth and Schindewolf children attended.

4 The Kennemuths in America, research manuscript by by Kermit Kennemuth. This manuscript forwarded to us by Judy King.

In the 1800's, Frankerhausen's citizens were mainly of two surnames, i.e. Kuhnemuth and Schindewolf. The Kuhnemuths lived in the east part of town on the main street; the Schindewolfs lived in the west part of town. <Our earliest known Kuhnemuth is Johannes, the father of Jacob. He married Anne Elizabeth Schindewolf (Brummelhof). Their son, Jacob, was born on 20 Oct 1796.
Jacob lived the first 58 years of his life in Frankershausen, attending the Evangelical Church and marrying a local girl, Dorothea Elizabeth Schindewolf, who was born in 1804, married Jacob on 30 Sept 1824. To this couple were born eight children as follows:

  • 1) Johannes b. 24 Dec 1825, d. 4 Mar 1886. Did not emigrate to America.
  • 2)Anna Katharina b. 27 Feb 1827 Am Wassar 49 d. 29 Jun 1889 m. Johann Frederick on 12 Oct 1850 (b. 17 Aug 1822, d. 12 Apr 1912).
  • 3) Johann Klaus b. 12 July 1829 d. 18 July 1839
  • 4) Anna Elizabeth b. 31 Mar 1832 d. 5 Feb 1915 m. Francis Etzel (b. 1817)
  • 5) Dorothea Elizabeth b. 29 Nov 1834 d. 7 Jan 1835
  • 6) Conrad b. 24 Mar 1837 d. 1927 m. Jane Clark
  • 7) Jacob b. 21 Jan 1840 d. 1925 m. Ann Clark
  • 8) Johann Reinhard b. 1 May 1843 d. 28 July 1923 m. 9 Nov 1869 to Mary Fox ( b. 5 May 1846 d. 30 Oct 1932
Jacob is listed in the church chronicles as a Carrier and Trader (Furrmann and Handelmann). Even though he is believed to have been comfortably well off, one report says that Johann Frederick, the intended husband of Anna Katharina paid the passage to America for the entire Kenemuth family. They left in an effort to avoid compulsory military service for their sons. At that time in Prussia service in the army was required of every able-bodied man, in active service for three yrs. and in the reserve for 2 yrs.

Property listed in the 1865 tax register was owned by Jacob Kuhnemuth and Frank Etzel until 1871 when the property was divided in half with each partner receiving 88 acres. They owned various numbers of cows through the years but no horses, and were described as farmers.

5 Page of Notes, apparently from Jacob Kennemuth's Bible, transcribed on p. 6 of The Kuhnemuths in America manuscript by Kermit Kennemuth.
