7 Obituary for Uzziel B. Church from the 25 Oct 1916 edition of the Clark Co., IL, newspaper obtained from the Clark Co. Historical Society by Margaret B. Binning in 1998, given to Tom Pearson, who then sent it to me. There is also an obituary for Uzziel in the 14 Oct 1916 edition of the Terre Haute Tribune available at the Vigo Co., IN, public library but it is not known at this time if the two obituaries are the same. The 25 Oct 1916 obituary, pictured at right, indicates that Uzziel was born in Greenfield, IN on 23 Dec 1837 and died at his home near Auburn [IN or IL? not stated] on 13 Oct 1916. At the age of 17 he moved with his father's family to Terre Haute, IN. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, enlisting with the 11th IN Infantry at the outbreak of the war and again with the 16th IN Infantry until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. After the war, he moved to New London, MO, and lived there for 9 years. He married Phebe Overman in Perry, MO, on 24 Mar 1867. Together, they had 8 children--2 boys, 6 girls. One son, Will Church, died 20 years prior to Uzziel's death. Still living are his wife and seven children, Frank Church of Terre Haute, Maggie Smittkamp of Marshall, Mattie Barlow of St. Louis, MO, Etta Shaffner of Martinsville, Cora Church, Goldie Brosman of Marinsville, and Mary Husted of Casey. He had 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Funeral was Monday, 16 Oct 1916 at the Auburn church.

They have the following children: John W., born 6 april 1868, dead; Maggie, born 23 Aug 1873; Frank, born 8 Jan 1870; Mattie, born 28 Apr 1875; Etta, born 7 Feb 1878; Cora, born 28 Nov 1880; Goldie, born 13? Source Notes

  • The Bureau of Pensions questionnaire gives a specific birth date for Cora of 28 Nov 1880, but she appears in the 1880 census dated 18 Jun 1880 at the age of 6 months. It is very likely that the birth date in the questionnaire is inaccurate.
