* The 1860 census, Butler Co. PA, was read page by page for the townships of Muddy Creek, Franklin twp. (including Prospect Borough), and  inadvertently Parker Twp.  John C. & Mary Stoughton were not found, but the census for Franklin Twp. available on ancestry.com began with dwelling # 232, so much of the Franklin Twp. census is apparently missing from that site.  It is presumed that since Mary Jane McCandless Stoughton was in Franklin Twp. in 1850 & 1870, she was probably there in 1860 also.  A different source for the 1860 census will need to be searched

* '''1840 United States Federal Census''' for Butler Co. PA showing families headed by James McCandless.  There are eight families, five of which have daughters in the 5-10 age range.  The Muddy Creek and Centre Twp. families seem most likely based on location.  Similarly, several possible James McCandless families are in the 1830 census.  Based on the above location, the best fit would appear to be the Muddy Creek family on pg 3: 2 males <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 20-30.

Source notes

  • The 1860 census, Butler Co.
