11 | Civil War Pension Record of James Kline, extracted by Kerry Kline. James Madison Kline served as a private in Co. H., 103 Pa voluntary Infantry from Feb. 1862 to 20 June 1862. Discharged from the Army on 20 June 1862 from Mt. Pleasant Hospital, Wash. D. C., on surgeon's Certif. of Disability, for amaurosis, or disease of the eyes, contracted before Yorktown, VA, either the last of April or first of May 1862. His company ha been building a temporary hospital and he was very hot. He laid down and took a drink of water from a spring. The water was very cold, which chilled his stomach and affected his eyes, an effect felt within five minutes. The next day James was taken by ambulance to Yorktown, and that night to Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Wash. D. C. James was discharged from there in June 1862. (See Source Notes.) |
Source notes
- Per research of Kerry Kline: James Madison Kline's 1st wife, Lucinda Rupert, divorced him after he left her in 1866; no children.
His 2nd wife, Jemina Null, is presumed to be the daughter of Andrew Null & Julia unknown. James Madison Kline & Jemina Null had 2 daughters (Mary Kline b. ~1868, in OH, & Lenora Kline, b. ~ 1872 in OH.)
3rd wife Eliza Hunley was "colored", according to one sworn statement in James' pension file. They may have had a daughter while he was still married to Jemina Null; (possibly Dora Kline b. Jan 1896 in OH) His Civil War service ended in early discharge due to temporary blindness; filed invalid pension 9June 1887, application # C12469, certificate #440936. Eliza applied for widow's pension 12 June 1912, application #988230, certificate #884479.
After James Kline's discharge from the army, from the Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Wash. D. C., he returned to Church, Clarion Co., PA, where he remained until the middle or latter part of April 1863. In April 1863 he moved to Vesuvins, Lawrence Co., OH, where he died in 1912.
