James Hoge was born in 1766 in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland County (present Juniata County),to Scottish parents Robert & Letitia Hoge who had immigrated to America in 1752. James met Mary Irwin who had also been born in Tuscarora Valley, apparently of Irish descent, and they married in 1789. Their first 3 children were probably born there. Despite having been given a 200 acre farm by his father, James Hoge moved westward in 1798 and settled in Centre Twp., Butler Co. PA for a time, on 150 acres of land. In 1803 he owned 150 acres in Middlesex Twp.; this probably represents the division of Centre Twp into additional townships, rather than a change of location for the Hoges. James and Mary had 3 more children, presumably born in Butler County. By 1830 he lived in Slippery Rock Twp., and there he died. He may have still retained the farm given him by his father,or he may have inherited his father's farm, for James Hoge's will speaks of proceeds from land in Turbett Twp., Juniata County. The farm in Slippery Rock Twp. passed to his 3rd child, James I. Hogue who lived there until he died; and then to James I. Hogue's son, Archibald Hogue.

Source notes

  • The History of Venango County PA, p. 831 biography of Thomas Hoge is at present the only source that gives the names of the parents of Mary Irwin. The reliability of the author is however questionable. This source lists the parents of Thomas Hoge as Mary Irwin and John Hoge (rather than James Hoge), and it lists his grandparents as Robert and Mary Hoge, (rather than Robert and Letitia). These variances in given names , between this source and The Descendants of Robert Hoge, leave the names in question, without additional evidence.
