| 1 | Manuscript: Descendants of Peter Hockenberry and His Son, John by Edith and Horace Renick, 1975, gives a detailed genealogical record of John Hockenberry and his father, Peter Hockenberry. John Hockenberry is listed as having been born around 1741, probably in Germany. He died around 1839, aged in his late 90's, and was probably buried near Coaltown, northwest of West Sunbury, Butler Co. PA. "Old tombstones are too smooth to read." He was married to Hannah Kelly. At the time of their marriage they moved to Tobogne Twp. in Cumberland Co., PA (became Perry Co. in 1830), and probably operated his father's stave mill in Tobogne Twp. He was one of the signers of a petition, signed 18 May, 1778, requesting arms to defend themselves against Tories and Indians. He obtained 400 acres of land in Cumberland Co. on 3 Feb 1796.(PA Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 25) In 1803, the John Hockenberry family (excluding his married son John, Jr.) moved to a spot a few miles south of Slippery Rock, Butler Co., PA. He moved again to Cherry Twp., Butler Co., just after 1830 and died there before 1840. His wife, Hannah Kelly, died soon after the 1803 move to Butler Co. Their children are listed as: John Hockenberry, Jr.; Casper Hockenberry, born 1785 and married to Margaret Shaffer; Joseph Hockenberry, born 1786 and married to Elizabeth unknown; Elizabeth Hockenberry, married James Buchanan; Jane Hockenberry, married Moses McCandless; Annie Hockenberry, married and died in Ohio; Ellen Hockenberry, married William Graham; and Jonathon Hockenberry, born 1795 and married Sarah Freeman. The Renicks note that Jonathon is listed as being older than his four sisters in the 1800 census, which conflicts with the order given above. |

Conjecture
At present nothing definite is known of the parents of Hannah Kelly. The Kelly name suggests Irish ancestry. The church records of the Cumberland Co. PA area now in Franklin & Perry counties have not been searched. If her family co-migrated to Butler County, some of the following may be possibilities, especially as they came from the (now) Perry Co. Pa area, apparently by way of New Jersey, as did Hannah's husband, John Hockenberry.
* Souvenir History of Slippery Rock, PA, 1925, p. 24 re. Worth Twp.: "about 1796 (several names) arrived in this locality, as did..Jonathan Kelly with his father and mother. In 1798 Archibald Kelly ...arrived."
* 1895 History of Butler Co. PA, p. 610 re. Worth Twp. "The pioneers of 1796, were Jonathan Kelly, the blacksmith, with his father and mother. The names of Archibald, Michael and Joseph Kelly, who came in 1798, appear on the records of original Slippery Rock township, in 1803..."
* 1895 History of Butler Co. PA, p. 61 Taxables of Slippery Rock Twp. in 1803 include Michael Kelly, Archibald Kelly, Jonathan Kelly (blacksmith), and Joseph Kelly; Michael with 400 acres, the others each with 200 acres.
* 1883 History of Butler Co. PA, p. 358, a biography of Joseph Kelly who emigrated from Perry County in 1798, with his brother Jonathan, a blacksmith. Joseph's wife was Else Lacey of New Jersey; of 10 children, 4 sons named as living in Butler Co.Joseph Kelly died in 1828. Homestead passed to his son Thomas, thence to grandson Thomas L Kelly who died in 1863, aged 76 yrs. Thomas L. Kelly married Sarah Hogue.
