1 1820 United States Federal Census, Center Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 4. The census is not dated. Family of M.A.McCandless: 1 male <10, 2 males 16-26, 2 males 26-44, 1 female <10, 2 females 16-26, 1 female >44.
This may corresponds to the Moses McCandless household, but with several variance problems. One male <10 : William age 1. Two males 16-26:possibly sons unknown to us at this time. Two males 26-44: Moses and unknown male, possibly a brother. One female <10: Hannah age 8. (Jane "Jennie" age 10, is not accounted for by the census, possibly living elsewhere as servant girl). Two females 16-26: Jane Hockenberry, age unknown, and possibly a sister of Moses McCandless. One female >44, possibly one of the widowed mothers (ie. Jane unknown McCandless, or Hannah Kelly Hockenberry). Jane "Jennie" McCandless would be ~age 10, per the 1850 census for her.

2 1830 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 15. Census is not dated. Family headed by Moses McCandless: 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female <5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40.
This possibly corresponds to 1 male 15-20 unknown; (William McCandless age 11 unaccounted for in the census); 1 male 40-50 Moses McCandless; 1 female <5, Mary "Polly McCandless; 1 female 5-10 unknown; 1 female 10-15 unknown; (Hannah McCandless 18 unaccounted for); 1 female 20-30 Jane "Jennie" McCandless;1 female 30-40 Jane Hockenberry McCandless.

3 1840 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 9. Census is not dated. Family headed by Moses McCandless: 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40.
This possibly corresponds to son William, 21; Moses; female 5-10 unknown; female 10-15 unknown; daughter Hanna 28; female30-40 unknown, possibly daughter Jane "Jennie" McCandless age 30 but we believe we have a census for her in 1840 married to James McCandless. Jane Hockenberry may have died by 1840. Since her daughter Hannah was born ~1810, Jane should have been born by about 1790-93 at latest, and should be aged at least 47-50 by the 1840 census.

  • When pages are developed for the children, Mary "Polly" McCandless should be traced to NY, where she apparently moved with her husband, George Mackey. They returned by 1870 since they and son Charles Mackey are living in Franklin Twp, Butler Co, PA in that census, but Charles is born in NY.
