NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

John Middleton, father-in-law of John G. Heater, is not in my ancestry. The Heeter family are ancestors of William B. Heeter of Richland Twp., Venango Co. PA, who married Allene M. Wilson. Allene was a sister of John Thomas Wilson, my grandfather.

Research Notes

  • MIDDLETON FAMILY
It is significant that Jane A., 2nd wife of John G. Heater, was buried in Scrubgrass Township (see Source 6, her death notice). In Source 5, the 1900 census, Jane Heeter has living with her a nephew, John H. Middleton. This suggests that Jane's maiden surname may have been Middleton.
William B. Heeter, a great-grandson of John G. Heater, said he had always heard that his family were related to the Middletons somehow.(William B. Heeter spoke with E.W.W. in June 2013). He was surprised that the wife would be buried in Scrubgrass Twp., as the Heeters to his knowledge were buried in Richland Twp.
If John G. Heater intended to be buried with his first wife Rachel who bore the majority of his children (burial place unknown at present), then Jane, as the second wife, might logically have been buried with her parental family in Scrubgrass.
A search of the 1850 census of Scrubgrass township, using Ancestry.com search engine, showed only one Middleton family, that of John Middleton age 50 (so born about 1800), and with a daughter Jane aged 21. Next door to them was the family of George & Margaret Morrison, both age 42 years (so born about 1808), and their children. Living with the Morrisons was a Jane Middleton age 70. This older Jane Middleton (born about 1780) is likely the mother of John Middleton (b. ~1800).and the mother of Margaret Morrison, (b. ~ 1808).
A search of Scrubgrass township census in 1860 for Middleton families showed only the family of John & Mary Middleton.
As no other Middletons are found in Scrubgrass township, we make the assumption that John and Mary Middleton, parents of a daughter Jane of appropriate age, are the parents of Jane A. Middleton who likely married John G. Heater.

The two census (1850 & 1960) for this Middleton family in Scrubgrass Township, Venango Co. PA , indicate daughter Jane, age 21 in 1850 (so b.~1829), and age 26 in 1860 (so b.~ 1834). The earlier birth date is likely closer to accurate, and the variance suggests some level of illiteracy.
