Source Notes

  • WIVES OF JOHN G. HEETER.
    * Death notice for Mrs. Jane A. Heeter, who died in 1913, aged 84 yrs., is assumed to be the wife of John A. Heater. However, no information in the notice specifically identifies her as his wife. Her birth year from the 1870 census would be 1831; from the death notice, 1829. The middle initial "A." was added to her name above, based on this death notice.
Staff at Franklin Public Library searched their Scrubgrass Cemetery book; no record for Jane A. Heeter was found.
  • In the 1900 census Jane Heeter (widow of John G. Heater) says she had 3 children, all living.
In 1870 the two oldest children listed in the home of John G. Heater & wife Jane are Charles age 14 and Nancy age 12. These two we believe are children of a different mother. No census record is found before 1870 in Pennsylvania for a John/John G. Heater/Heeter with a wife Jane . However,in Clarion Co. PA in 1860, a John G. Heeter with wife Rachel list a son Charles age 4 and a daughter Nancy age 1,(and 2 older children, Margaret and William).
We conclude that John G. Heeter married first to Rachel, who had at least 5 children then died, possibly at the birth of son George in 1860 or 1861. The birth of George Heeter comes about two years after the birth of Nancy, but a five to six year gap follows the birth of George. We therefore think that Rachel was George's mother, and the gap in births came after Rachel's death. By 1866 John Heeter had remarried to Jane, and their son James E. was born that year, followed by two more children. The change of spouse may coincide with the change of county of residence; or the change in residence may simply reflect a change in county & township borders.
  • In 1850 census, no Heeter/Heater family is found in Venango Co. PA, and only one family in Clarion Co. PA. No appropriate John Heeter/Heater/Huter etc. is found in PA.

Research

  • MIDDLETON FAMILY
It is significant that Jane A., 2nd wife of John G. Heater, was buried in Scrubgrass Township (see Source 6, her death notice). In Source 4, the 1900 census, Jane Heeter has living with her a nephew, John H. Middleton. This suggests that Jane's maiden surname may have been Middleton.
William B. Heeter, a great-grandson of John G. Heater, said he had always heard that his family were related to the Middletons somehow.(William B. Heeter spoke with E.W.W. in June 2013). He was surprised that the wife would be buried in Scrubgrass Twp., as the Heeters to his knowledge were buried in Richland Twp.
If John G. Heater intended to be buried with his first wife Rachel who bore the majority of his children (burial place unknown at present), then Jane, as the second wife, might logically have been buried with her parental family in Scrubgrass.
A search of the 1850 census of Scrubgrass township, using Ancestry.com search engine, showed only one Middleton family, that of John Middleton age 50 (so born about 1800), and with a daughter Jane aged 21. Next door to them was the family of George & Margaret Morrison, both age 42 years (so born about 1808), and their children. Living with the Morrisons was a Jane Middleton age 70. This older Jane Middleton (born about 1780) is likely the mother of John Middleton (b. ~1800),and the mother of Margaret Morrison, (b. ~ 1808).
A search of Scrubgrass township census in 1860 for Middleton families showed only the family of John & Mary Middleton.
As no other Middletons are found in Scrubgrass township, we make the assumption that John and Mary Middleton, parents of a daughter Jane of appropriate age, are the parents of Jane A. Middleton who likely married John G. Heater.

The two census (1850 & 1960) shown below for this Middleton family in Scrubgrass Township, Venango Co. PA , indicate daughter Jane, age 21 in 1850 (so b.~1829), and age 26 in 1860 (so b.~ 1834). The earlier birth date is likely closer to accurate, and the variance suggests some level of illiteracy.
