John G. Heater

NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR John G. Heeter/Heater is not in my ancestry. The Heeter family are ancestors of William B. Heeter of Richland Twp., Venango Co. PA, who married Allene M. Wilson. Allene was a sister of John Thomas Wilson, my grandfather.

6	Death Notice for Mrs. Jane A. Heeter, Venango Citizen Press, 19 March 1913. Photocopy supplied by Franklin Public Library. Mrs. Jane A. Heeter aged 84 years died early on Sunday evening (i.e. 16 Mar. 1913) at her home near town from a complication of diseases and old age. Interment was made yesterday (i.e. 18 Mar 1913) in Scrubgrass cemetery.

Source Notes

• Staff at Franklin Public Library searched their Scrubgrass Cemetery book; no record for Jane A. Heeter found.
• In the 1900 census Jane Heeter (widow of John A. Heater) says she had 3 children, all living. In 1870 the two oldest children of John A. Heater,living with spouse Jane, are Charles age 14 and Nancy age 12. No census record is found for a John A. Heater/Heeter , or John Heater/Heeter with a wife Jane before 1870 in Pennsylvania. However, a John G. Heeter, with wife Rachel (and a son Charles age 4 and daughter Nancy age 1, and 2 older children), are found in Clarion Co. PA in 1860. We conclude that John Heeter married first to Rachel, who had at least 5 children then died, possibly at the birth of son George in 1860 or 1861. By 1866 John Heeter had remarried to Jane, and their son James E. was born that year, followed by two more children. The change of county of residence and change of spouse may have coincided.
• In 1850 census, no Heeter/Heater family is found in Venango Co. PA, and only one family in Clarion Co. PA. No appropriate John Heeter/Heater/Huter etc. is found in PA.
• Death notice for Mrs. Jane A. Heeter, who died in 1913, aged 84 yrs., is assumed to be the wife of John A. Heater. However, no information in the notice specifically identifies her. Her birth year from the 1870 census would be 1831; from the death notice, 1829. The middle initial "A." was added to her name above, based on this death notice.

Research

• It is significant that Jane A., 2nd wife of John G. Heater, was buried in Scrubgrass Township (see Source 6, her death notice). In Source 4, the 1900 census, Jane A. Heater has living with her a nephew, John H. Middleton. This suggests that Jane A.'s maiden surname may have been Middleton. In June 2013, William B. Heeter, who would be her great-grandson, said that he had always heard that his family were related to the Middletons somehow(interviewed by E.W.W.). He was surprised that she would be burried in Scrubgrass Twp., as the Heeters to his knowledge were buried in Richland Twp.
  Perhaps John G. Heater intended to be buried with his first wife Rachel who bore the majority of his children (burial place unknown at present. Jane A. as the second wife might then have been buried with her parental family in Scrubgrass. The census below for a Middleton family in Scrubgrass Township, Venango Co. PA in 1850 & 1960, indicate a daughter Jane, age 21 in 1850 (so b. ~1829), and age 26 in 1860 (so b. ~ 1834). The earlier birth date is likely more accurate, and the variance suggests some level of illiteracy.
