entry #18 from top: Family headed by Samuel Church: 3 males <5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 30-40, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 70-80. Samuel is 74 and Elizabeth 70 in 1840. This is Samuel Church living with his wife and two families of his children and grandchildren. Erastus Church is 32 and Caroline Church 8 and the four oldest sons of Erastus and Lucy are 7, 5, 3, and 1 in 1840. These all agree with persons in the above list. Lucy Whitten should be 32 also and this is not in agreement.

In the center is the family of Erastus Church, and on either side of him are the families of two of his sons, Langdon Church and Erastus Warren Church.

Cora is a public school teacher. Mary's occupation is listed as "short hand." Claude is a general farm laborer.

Be was buried on 16 Oct 1916 in Auburn. He was a farmer. His father was Erastus Church, born in VT, and his mother was Lucy Whitten, born in VT. FHL film number 1530532.

13 American Civil War Soliders has a listing for Uzziel B. Church of Vigo Co., IN enlisting in the Union Army as a Private in Company D, 11th Infanty Regiment of Indiana on 21 Apr 1861. He mustered out of the same company on 4 Aug 1861 at Indianapolis, IN.
14 American Civil War Soliders has a listing for Uzzill B. Church of Terra Haute, IN enlisting in the Union Army as a Private in Company I, 16th Infanty Regiment of Indiana on 17 Aug 1862. He was promoted to Full Sergeant. He mustered out on 30 Jun 1865 at New Orleans, LA.
15 Obituary for Uzziel B. Church from the 14 Oct 1916 edition of the Terre Haute Tribune. It indicates that Uzziel was born in Greenfield, IN on 23 Dec 1837 and died at his home near Auburn [IN or IL? not stated] on 13 Oct 1916. At the age of 17 he moved with his father's family to Terre Haute, IN. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, enlisting with the 11th IN Infantry at the outbreak of the war and again with the 16th IN Infantry until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. After the war, he moved to New London, MO, and lived there for 9 years. He married Phebe Overman in Perry, MO, on 24 Mar 1867. Together, they had 8 children--2 boys, 6 girls. One son, Will Church, died 20 years prior to Uzziel's death. Still living are his wife and seven children, Frank Church of Terre Haute, Maggie Smittkamp of Marshall, Mattie Barlow of St. Louis, MO, Etta Shaffner of Martinsville, Cora Church, Goldie Brosman of Marinsville, and Mary Husted of Casey. He had 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Funeral was Monday, 16 Oct 1916 at the Auburn church. Note that the scanned image at right seems to be taken from a newspaper published on 25 Oct 1916, and thus likely a reprint of the original 14 Oct 1916 obit from the Terre Haute Tribune. However, the information regarding the 16 Oct 1916 burial would not have been present in the 14 Oct 1916 obit, so obtaining the TH Tribune version might still provide original information.

16 Civil War Pension Index, 1861-1934, has a record for soldier Uzziel P. Church, with dependent widow Pheba A. Church. He served in Co. I, 16th IN Infantry and Co. D, 11th IN Infantry. An "Invalid" filing was made on 12 May 1879, application number 285570, certificate number 192077. A "widow" class filing was made from IL on 28 Oct 1916, application number 1082715, certificate number 849907.

Buried 17 Dec 1939 in Auburn Twp., Clark, IL, at a cemetery called "Auburn." She was 94. Her last residence was Martinsville, Auburn, Clark, IL. Her father was William Overman, born NC, her mother was Jane Carr, born IN. Her spouse was Uzziel B. Church.

21 Bureau of Pensions Questionnaire filled in on 4 May 1898 by Uzziel B. Church indicates that he is married to Pheba A. Overman and has not been married previously. They were married at Perry, Ralls Co., MO, on 24 Mar 1867 by William J. Clayton, minister. They have the following children: John W., born 6 april 1868, dead; Maggie, born 23 Aug 1873; Frank, born 8 Jan 1870; Mattie, born 28 Apr 1875; Etta, born 7 Feb 1878; Cora, born 28 Nov 1880; Goldie, born 13? Feb 1885; and Mary, born 1 Dec 1892. The hand-written address in the middle seems to indicate that Uzziel lives in Clark Centre, Clark Co., IL.

22 Bureau of Pensions Notice of Dropped Pensioner dated 2 Nov 1916 indicates that Uzziel B. Church of Martinsville, IL, has been dropped from his Civil War pension as a result of his death on 13 Oct 1916. His last pension received was $30 on 4 Oct 1916.

23 Declaration for Pension dated 20 May 1912 for Uzziel B. Church. He is 74 years old. He lives in Auburn Twp., Clark Co., IL. He enrolled as a private with Co. D, 11th IN Infantry, on 17 Apr 1861 in Terre haute, IN. He was honorably discharged at Terre Haute, IN, during or near Aug 1861. He also served in Co. I, 16th IN Infantry, enlisting on 10 July 1862 and was discharged at New Orleans, LA, on 30 Jun 1865. At the time of his first enlistment, he was a farmer. He was born on 23 Dec 1837 in Greenfield, IN. Since the war, he has lived in Sugar Creek Twp., Vigo Co., IN, Ralls Co., MO, for 9 years, and Clark Co., IL, for the last 30 years. His pension certificate number is 192077. His post office address is R.R. #7, Martinsville, Clark Co., IL. The witnesses to this document were Cary Marion(?) and Jacob Fraker.

24 General Affadavit dated 27 Aug 1917 indicating that Pheba A. Church is the widow of Uzziel B. Church and that he served in Co. D, 11th IN Infantry during the civil war. The "Wid. Orig." number is 1082715. Mary Wells, 68, of Gadsden Co., FL, is Pheba's sister. She indicates that Pheba and Uzziel were married near Perry, Ralls Co., MO, on 24 Mar 1867 and that she was there for the marriage. At the time of the marriage, Pheba and Uzziel were living with their parents in Ralls Co., MO.

25 General Affadavit dated 16 Feb 1918 indicating that Pheba A. Church, age 72, of Martinsville, IL, R. R. #7, has no official record of her birth date and doesn't know what happened to her father's bible which contained such records. She believes her birth date to be 14 Nov 1845, and her birth place to be near Knightstown, Henry Co., IN. She lived with her parents at the place of her birth in 1850 and 1860. Her father's name is William M. Overman. Her mother's name is Jane E. Overman. She has sisters named Nancy J. Overman, Mary A. Overman, Sarah Overman, and Margaret Overman. She has brothers named Charles W. Overman, Robert T. Overman, Richard B. Overman, Samuel M. Overman, and James Overman. They were all living in Jun 1850 and Jun 1860. Her brother Charles served in the Civil War.

26 Letter from the War Department dated 27 Jul 1940 regarding the military service of Uzziel B. Church. He was enrolled 10 Jul 1862 at Terre Haute, IN, and mustered in the same day at Indianapolis, IN, as a private in Company I, 16th IN Infantry. He was mustered out and honorably discharged as a sergeant on 30 Jun 1865 at New Orleans, LA. He was wounded in battle near Richmond, KY, on 30 Aug 1862. Additional information on the regiment may be found in Volume 2, pages 143, 144, of Report of the Adjutant General, State of Indiana.
