2 1870 United States Federal Census, Franklin Township, Butler County, PA, Page 13, lines 1-8 lists John Stoughton, 34, married to Mary, 33. They live with seven children: son James Stoughton, 15; daughter Mary Stoughton, 14; daughter Ann Stoughton, 11; daughter Elizabeth Stoughton, 8; daughter Ellen Stoughton, 4; and daughter Jane Stoughton, 2. John Stoughtonis listed as a farmer, Mary Stoughton as "keeping house," and James Stoughton as "farm laborer." Everyone is listed as having been born in PA. Mary Stoughton has a "father of foreign birth." James, Mary, Ann, and Elizabeth attended school within the year. Mary and Ann are listed as unable to write. This census page is undated. However, the previous page is dated July 21, 1870 and the following page is dated July 21,22 1870.

3 1880 United States Federal Census, Franklin Township, Butler County, PA, Enumeration district 42, Page 17, lines 14-18 lists John C. Stoughton, 50, married to Mary Jane Stoughton, 50. They live with three children: daughter Ellin Stoughton, 14; daughter Sydy Jane Stoughton, 12; and son Solomon Stoughton, 3. Mary Jane Stoughton is somehow listed as both married and single. John C. Stoughton is a farmer. Everyone and their parents were born in PA. Ellin and Sydy attended school within the census year. This census is dated 9 Jun 1880.

6 20th Century History of Butler & Butler Countyby James A. McKee, Butler PA 1909,p.1001, biographical sketch: Solomon R. Stoughton, ... son of John C. and Mary Jane (McCandless) Stoughton. The Stoughtons... became the parents of seven children, all of whom attained maturity, and of whom there are now three survivors. They were as follows: James, a resident of Claytonia; Mary, now deceased, who was the wife of Henry Miller; Elizabeth, wife of James L. Wilson, of Brady Township; Annie, now deceased, who was the wife of Samuel Lawrence, of Muddy Creek Township; Ella, also deceased, who was the wife of William Stine, of Brady Township; Mrs. Sydney Jane Conroy, of New Castle; and Solomon R., whose name appears at the head of this sketch.
