Samuel Beals
Samuel and Catherine had been married for nine years and had three living children when the Civil War began. Samuel did not go to war, but had three brothers who served, and survived.
Instructions for the census-takers of 1880 include "The Name of each Person
whose place of abode on 1st day of June 1880, was in this family." For the family of Samuel Beals, the name of wife Catherine is listed, with the note "Hung herself June 3." Catherine was fifty years old. The youngest child, a daughter, was age ten. Catherine's graceful pink marble stone is in the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, the property for which was donated by the Beals family.
Seven months later (January 1881) Samuel married Lizzy Levy, and in September of that year their first child was born.
Samuel's obituary says he had fourteen children, seven by the first marriage, six by the second, and one step-son. This however does not take into account the two children who died young, one by each wife.
The step-son, Warren Baker, has not yet been traced by us, and it is unclear how he could be the son by a first marriage of either Catherine Marsh (living at home with her parents in 1850 census) or Lizzy Leavy (at home with her parents in 1880). He does not appear in any census in the Samuel Beals household.

Source Notes
- The Clarion County Cemeteries transcription project of 1986, available through the Clarion County Historical Society shows a gravestone at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Beaver City, transcribed as "Beals, Isaac, Son of S. & C. Beals." It notes that the grave is near that of Catherine Beals. This child is not noted in any other source that we are aware of. In two trips to this cemetery by E. W. Williams (1991 when stones were less weathered, & 2006 after much undergrowth was cleared away), transcriptions were made of a small stone that reads "Infant son of J & C Beals, died May 21 1860 aged 5 days." This is believed to be a child of Jacob Beals, Jr. and wife Clara. It is wondered if the previous transcriber ( possibly a Girl Scout project for the Historical Society) mistook "Infant Son" for "Isaac Son". The "J" & "C" are faint, easily misread, and the date could be 1850 or 1860. Neither of these dates works well for a child of Samuel & Catherine Beals; they weren't married until 1852, and they had another child born in 1860.
- In the 1900 census wife Elizabeth reports having 6 children, 6 currently living. The Salem Lutheran Cemetery association lists a 7th, Essie, apparently (by order listed) born between 1886 and 1890; infant death. Correspondant/Contributor Duane Beals confirms a daughter Essa, born May or June, 1889.
- Obituary of Samuel Beals in Seneca Kicker: reports erroneously that Samuel Beals was buried at Emanuel Cemetery. Samuel had given land for this cemetery and his first wife Catherine Marsh is buried there, but he was buried with a large gravestone at Knox Cemetery with his 2nd wife Lizzy Leavey.
