Six of Catharine Kline Strotman's twelve children died within the first year of life, some within a month of their birth. Of the six who grew to adulthood, two died at ages 28 and 29, apparently unmarried. This pattern suggests the presence of a recurring genetic defect. Downs syndrome would be a possibility with its accompanying tendency toward heart defect. Seven of Kate's children died before she did. It is possible that the family of Mary Ann Kline and John Henry Strotman shared the same problem; three of their children died within a year of their birth.
