1 | 1840 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 23. Census is not dated. Family headed by Barnard Stoeton(sic): 2 males <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30. The male and female in their 20's are the proper ages for Barnard Stoughton and his wife Susan. The two youngest males are likely to be their children, but the 10-15 year old seems too old to be a child of someone in their 20's. Family headed by Margaret Stoeton is two entries earlier; William Wimer is next entry. |

2 | 1850 United States Federal Census, Piney Twp, Clarion Co, PA, page 24. Previous page dated 30 Sept. 1850. Lines 16-25: B.W. Stoughton, 33, shoemake; Susannah, 33; John, 14; Joseph, 12; Elliott, 10; Hannah, 8; Catharine, 6; Susannah, 4; Jane, 2; Elizabeth, 1/2. John, Joseph, Elliott and Hannah attended school. The ages of the children align well with other census data, as does the age for Barnard Stoughton. |

3 | 1860 United States Federal Census, Tionesta Twp, Venango Co, PA, page 13. Census dated 15 Aug 1860. Lines 6-14:D.V. Stoten, 42, farmer, $500 real, $150 personal property; Susan, 46; Joseph, 21, farmer; C.H., 18, farmer; Hannah, 18, house keeping; Catherine, 16, house keeping; June, 12; Elizabeth, 10; Ida, 7. All b. PA. This family is a good match for that of Barnard Stoughton""" in names and ages. The discrepancy in the name of Barnard is possibly an notation error by the census taker. |

Source notes
- Per contributor James Voltz, one of Jane Stoughton (b. 1821) & Thomas Boyle's children was Martha Boyle(b. ~1840's?) who married John Edward Hagan. It is said that he was a Missouri farmer. In the 1880 census of Barber Co. Kansas, Lake City township, the family of Thomas B. Hagan, age 45, lives next to the family of Barned(sic) V. Stoughton, age 61. The birth date of Thomas B. Hagan (~1835) puts him in the same generation as John Edward Hagan and wife Martha Boyle. Note that his daughter was born in Missouri. We assume this to be John E. Hagan, miss-enumerated as Tom B. Hagan.
- Per the obituary of Barnard V. Stoughton's wife Susan Myer, her first husband was John Hagan, father of John E. Hagan. Susan's son John E. Hagan married Barnard's niece Martha Boyle. Both families apparently originated in Clarion Co. PA.
